I'm in need of a new 56k modem. I saw in a Jan. 2000 post by Mighty that PCI modems are not the best for sims. Do they result in slower connectivity or is the problem in using PC resorces? I have a PCI 56k v90 now and it would seem easier to pop in a PCI again. Suggestions? IP: Logged |

Get an external modem using the Rockwell chipset. It's faster and doesn't chew up CPU time like a Winmodem. Also, it doesn;t take up another IRQ this way.I used a Phoebe modem before I got DSl- worked great and is inexpensive (for an external). ------------------ "Where'd he GO!?!?" thunk-thunk-thunk-zing-OUCH That answered my question IP: Logged |

Spanky here... If DSL or cable is avalible in your area don't waste your money on a modem. Heck they should be free to people that actually pay for 56k dialup service as part of the contract now. Isa isn't that hard to install and you might find some used cheap. External is another option although i always found them overpriced. IP: Logged |

You don't want ISA. There's a performance penalty if you install an ISA card. Not huge, I don't think, but probably noticable.Sport, there are some PCI modems that have their own processor and are "real" modems. But probably 95+% of PCI modems are Winmodems, that use the CPU to do the analog to digital conversion. Winmodems are fine for general surfing, but eat way too many CPU cycles for use with high performance games. IP: Logged |

Go for a well know brand like 3com, Hayes (or whoever owns them now). I've used an external Hayes Accura for the last couple of years (that long!!!) and it's been a quality piece of kit. They also do an internal PCI version too I think. With an external modem you get all the RS RI CD OH RD SD TR MR leds so you can see what's happening ------------------ IP: Logged |

If an internal PCI modem is compatible with Linux, it's not a Win modem. This site lists modems that are compatible with Linux along with those that aren't. It even explains why a winmodem sucks. Any PCI modem listed as compatible is a "true" modem (the kind Mighty referred to with their own processor). http://www.o2.net/%7Egromitkc/20010116a.html If it has a green box in the left hand column and "ok", it's a true modem. ------------------ "Where'd he GO!?!?" thunk-thunk-thunk-zing-OUCH That answered my question

Definitely go with a hardware modem. I'd go with the U.S. Robotics 56K external, if you're willing to pay that much for a modem.Spanky, ya gotta realize DSL and cable still aren't available in a lot of backwater places, here included. In fact, we have such crappy phone lines around here (thanks, Sprint!) I was getting a 26.4K connection with my old WinModem and get 36K or 37.3K with my U.S. Robotics internal hardware modem. Still got my old external 33.6, so I can multilink using both phone lines! OK, so you got DSL. We don't. ------------------ -=TheReaper=- IP: Logged |

Thanks guys, Time to go shopping. I hate to admit it, but I've had DSL available for almost a year. With to many budget demands now, it will have to wait. I can get free DSL with a $200. modem, but those ad banners driver me crazy.IP: Logged |
