Intel refuses to drop their margins below a certain percentage.I thought about upgrading my Celeron to a PIII Prices locally PIII 700 with adapter card and fan for slot 1- $239 800 MHZ Athlon with fan and new motherboard- $209 IS somebody at intel sniffing the silicon? ------------------ "Where'd he GO!?!?" thunk-thunk-thunk-zing-OUCH That answered my question IP: Logged |

An athlon is faster than a p3 at the same clock speed too !IP: Logged |

Spanky here... Man I wish I could find some prices up here like that. For a board and a duron800 it would be 364 canadian. Plus tax for an athlon 750 it would be another 60 bucks. IP: Logged |

yep, thats why I bought a Duron30% cheaper than a Celeron and faster too. I can't afford the newest and the best, but I know value for money when I see it. And Intel just isn't it! They ruled the roost for a while, and seem to have got complacent.... IP: Logged |

Spanky- go to pricewatch.com. It'll taking some digging, but some of the vendors used ship to Canada, so there still should be some that do.IP: Logged |

Spanky here... Yeah I know but you still have to factor in shiping, exchange, duty and taxes. It sometimes still comes in cheaper though. Belive me if i had a credit card i would be getting one right now. LOL

Ok, I got a PII 350, and it's time to upgrade. Can you guys give me some options? I need a whole new Mother board and Processor... Plus memory. I have been out of the loop for a while now, and I'm not sure whats good or bad anymore. This place is the best place in town for comp stuff, so IF you were me, what would you get from here? I'm thinking in the 700-800 MHz range, but I don't want to spend too much money here. http://www.memoryexpress.net/ What's the difference between socketA and slotA?....... the Athlon SocketA 1000 GHz looks pretty cheap!! SPanky here... Duron 700-800 and an asus board sounds like a great combo for not too much money.
Can you belive the prices of intel chips. Athlon 1000 for 309 and a 1000 p3 is 869. As freaking if.

Spanky here... Alot of people would answer yes Jag, there are tests showing the athlon 1.2ghz is faster then the P4 1.4.

A socket is a large square with many holes in it for the CPU pins to stick in. It lies flat in the motherboard. (Unless you have a socket adapter for a slot motherboard)A slot is short and thin and you stick the CPU into it like you stick a graphics card into a AGP slot. Slot mounted CPUs stick straight up and they are connected to the slot by small strips of metal. (This pieces of gold and other conducting materials instead of pins) Slot mounted CPUs take up more room on the mother board and I believe slot mounted CPUs tend to be faster than socket mounted CPUs. I believe they switched to slot mounted CPUs due to the thickness (Or thinness) of silicon. [This message has been edited by ArgonV (edited 01-14-2001).] IP: Logged |

Jag- Get a socket A board, slot A tops out at 850MHZ and socket A's are the ones that allow you to go over 1GHzIf you have a PII 350, it means you have 100MHZ Ram. Get a processor that runs with a 100MHZ FSB, not 133, and you can still use the same ram. However, this will limit the speed you can ultimately go to. If you can afford the extra money for the 133MHZ ram go that route. You'll still bae able to use everything else from your old system with one possible exception. If you have an AT case, you'll have to buy a new ATX case. Also the KT133 chipset seems to be the best 133 FSB non DDR chipset for speed. ------------------ "Where'd he GO!?!?" thunk-thunk-thunk-zing-OUCH That answered my question IP: Logged |

I'll definately be getting the 133 MHz RAM.... mine as well, I mean I'll have to do it sooner or later. The only problem, is that I won't be able to afford much off the bat. I'll have to buy more later....... Maybe I'll wait another month or two till the 1Ghz CPUs come down in price.IP: Logged |

Spanky here... I would suggest against that man. if you do that in a month or 2 you will say. "ah i'll just wait a couple months for the 1.2ghz chips to come down in price" LOL It never ends if you do that, I know its a bragging right to have a 1 ghz machine but really is it that important?

I dunno. When the Gig chips came out I saw an article about RAM SIMMS for them. $1500US for 32Meg (or was it 64 Meg?), I think. I've bought cars for less than that. Still, I desparately need one. Along with the loaded deisel Suburban in British racing green and grey leather interior and ALL the after market bells and whistles.IP: Logged |
