Spanky here...

Seems theres alot of this combatsim stuff going around.

Check out the first 2 headlines here..

http://www.ars-technica.com/

Seems we will be paying for some sites someday. And advertising ain't making no one ANY money.

I can really see places like IGN starting to charge before the year is done.

And get this now you can't even see the articles being run at combat sim to see if you want to subscribe.

Yep can't even stroll through the table of contents.

Can someone please teach this guy some marketing?

Gotta say I visit combatsim more often now that its closed then I did when it was open just to see whats going down. LOL

As a matter of fact thats like trying to sell a gaming mag without any headlines or cool pictures on the front.

Just huge combat sim pic and a sealed tight mag.

Its blowing my mind.

I know he is primarly trying to get former visiters to sign up, but he is going to have to show that he still has decent content. or more correctly BETTER content.

He is going to have to have some free articles to show the quality of the writing going on.

Spanky I'm sure he'll wise up to that eventually. Put yourself in his shoes - he's had such a hectic week what for all the emails, the site changes already locking down stuff and that little bit of stress caused by imminent doom that I doubt the "free tour" is high on his priority list.

As for pay for play sites, screw 'em. I'd rather get my reviews from dozens of different users by hearing their experiences anyways. Like listening to a round table discussion on politics or judging campaigns solely by their ads.

Bah..gloom and doom

Anyone remember that little Y2K incident about, say, a year ago?

I think combatsim.com is charging because the owner is an idiot. That site used to get a ton of hits....if he advertised right he would have been making money. Now he probably has 10% of his former audience.

Besides, paying for articles is silly too. Most people would do articles just because they love flightsims/wargames. Plus, just read the message boards and you can find out what's going on with the community anyway.

When places like voodooextreme or tom's hardware start charging, then I'll get concerned.

I really don't think you make much money off ads guys.

Think about it, how often do you actually click on one of those ads.

In my 4 years of web use, me? 2. Yep thats it thats all 2 and I spend a HUGE amount of time on the web.

Werner, I agree with you on the review issue. I usually just check out the conclusion to see whats up at a bunch of sites. Rarly are they in line with my thoughts but I still like to see.

Dan I never had any belifes that anything was going to happen because of Y2K.

ALso he WANTED a smaller audience, Cause he doesn't want to live off ads, Cause he couldn't.

He wanted a smaller audience so he would have a smaller bandwidth bill.

ALso I did my 2 part article for them on making missions for SDOE. I would MAYBE have done that for free. But Really the money motivated me to finish it. Even with that I was way late.

Mad dog was making a living doing reviews. I'm sure he wouldnt' want to start doing them for free just for the fun of it.
