I don't know if you're into birds eye view commander type of games (turn based, not like Close Combat), but there's a company called Matrix Games that has rebuilt and rereleased one of my first, and favourite wargames of all time, Steel Panthers. I guess SSI gave them the code to SP1,2,3 (hint, hint ) on the condition they could do whatever they want with it, but they couldn't distribute it on cd (too easy to sell) or sell outright. That's right folks, this is a game for FREE. Totally legit. This blows my mind, I have no idea how they can afford to do this, except perhaps as a way of getting you to visit their site, except their site hosts... even more FREE rebuilt classics. It's really worth a look, imo.

The only obstacle to getting these games is download size (remember, no cd distribution allowed..). Are you sitting down? Steel Panthers: World at War on a 56k modem will set you back about 30 hours of web time, before splitting with your regular web activity. Seriously though, suck it up and download GetRight and take on this 400+ Mb behemoth. You'll be grateful you did.

Great site Werner...have it book marked...thanks!

I've been an SP2 fan for a few years now - so has my son - it's a great game.

I'm part way through the World at War download - taking a while as you say (that and so many sdoe downloads to get through )

Cheers,

AGAS 5

ownloaded this one a while back, used go-zilla and took a week, off and on, on a 56K modem!

Well worth the trouble!

You get all the basics of SP1, with paratroops and air transport, similar to SP2, you get much bigger maps, loads more units, and a really long campaign!

You can buy far more units with your points, and the armour values etc. are much better thought out. phew!

Also, artillery is more effective, and counter battery fire works too. Reinforcements can be set to occur in scenario's and there are more terrain choices too! Visibility is taken into account, and you can fight night battles. The map looks the same, but visibilty is greatly reduced.

Oh yeah, best bit....IT'S FREE

I loved SP1, played the SP2 demo, but got put off by the small map....M1A1's can kill anything on map, their effective range was bigger than the map! SP3...nah...hated that small look!

SPWAW is excellent!

Played a campaign as Germans, and against early war Russians, got hit with a heavy assault. Fortunately, I had invested in some 88's.....Killed 32 tanks in one round, 15 next...and they were still coming...10 next....oh yes, you can fight some big battles!

need to upgrade to V4.4 which looks like meaning another very long download...but I'll do it!
