When you increase the memory you increase the amount of texture cache that resides in true memory as opposed to sitting on your hard drive in the swop file, you then get less slow downs as the texures are draw into memory from the hard drive as you say fly over a new section of terrain for the first time. I started with 64Mb and the hard drive light was on 50% of the time, I then went to 128Mb and they reduced a lot but were still there. I am now at 256mb and other than at load up the HD light never shows. You can also force windows to minimise the its use of the swop file by using this trick. This was posted on this board before but I cant remember who (could have been Pye).I ran out and got it after work on Friday and haven't hardly stopped playing! No install probs,so far no crashes or bugs.I run in 1152 x 964 with no slow downs or stutters on a P II 400,256mb ram, geforce II MX.I think one thing that has helped all my games is this:I added a line to the 386ENH folder in msconfig that reads-ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 this forces windows to use your physical memory before it starts swapping to the hard drive,I also have a healthy swap file[512mb]on the hard drive. well all i know from using win2k, 128 just wasnt cuttin it for my gaming habit. 256 made one hell of a difference, im sure it wouldn't have been much using 98 because its not nearly as memory intensive as win2k.so just remember if you ever upgrade to win2k or whistler, which is the next windows platform, upgrade your ram too.
