Has anybody seen this movie? Its an excellent animation set during 50's US (with a big Iron Giant ) Some excellent scenes concerning cold war paranoia. Some really freaky 'educational' cartoons showing the kids in the movie what to do in the event of a missle strike. Is anybody here old enough to remember this kind of thing?

I remember those movies. I guess they figured getting under your desk and covering your head with your hands would keep you from getting caught by the blast so you could have the wonderful experience of radiation poisoning.

They seemed soooo imprtant back then (60's) and now they are sooooo ridiculous

The Southpark cartoon made fun of such a thing. The say to save your self from lava, get under a blanket and duck and cover.... lol!

It must of been a very weird, wonderful and scary time to be a kid. My father remembers hearing noises outside of the local chapel during mass when he was very young and fearing it was the Russians. This was in a backward irish rural community. I can't imagine what it was like in the US.

Yes Burkey, I do. My wife had it even worse. She grew up in Richland, Washington site of the Hanford atomic works. This was the major (and for a long time the only) plutonium producer in the states - it was where the Nagasaki bomb was built. The town was considered a prime target of the Soviets (and probably was) so the whole town drilled frequently, especially the school kids.

It may seem rediculous to some now, but when you're a kid it's not so funny.

I grew up in Montana- we had the largest number of ABM sites in the country. Through the 3rd grade I remember the drills. The town I grew up in was Great Falls. We also ahd a NORAD station at Malmstom AFB. THere was a weekly test of the air raid sirens up until I was about 8 years old. (by then they realized this was all awaste of time)

Another comedian did a joke about the duck & cover- said that way when you were a grandpa, you could show your blast withered hands to the grandkids, and explain how your brains would have been fried if it hadn't been for your hands blocking the blast and radiation from your head

It all seems so silly now

It does seem silly now but was very serious
back then. My grandmother would go and stand
on top of the bank building every Wednesday
with an airplane sillouet book and watch
for Russian aircraft. She was called a
Civil defense spotter.
