I'm gonna upgrade from 64 to 196 MB's o' RAM. Trouble is I dunno what type of RAM is in my machine now. I know there's PC100, 133 and 166 RAM. Is there any difference between those three?? Can I for example have one stick of PC133 RAM and two with PC 166 RAM???IP: Logged |

Hi. All RAM must be of the same type. Fortunately, if it's not the same it doesn't destroy your machine, it just won't work. Best way to find out what you have is to look at your sales receipt. Failing that you can either take the system unit with you or pop out one SIMM or DIMM or whatever and take that with you. DO NOT carry it in your pocket. Use an anti-static bag. The age of your machine should tell the sales guy approximately what you're likely to have, but there are no gaurantees of this. Hope this helps.IP: Logged |

Tell me what make and speed your processor is and I can tell you what speed of RAM is required. You can mix different speeds of RAM on a machine, but the slowest has to be in the first memory bank. So, if your machine already has PC100, you can insert a PC133 stick in the second slot and everything will work fine. ------------------ "Where'd he GO!?!?" thunk-thunk-thunk-zing-OUCH That answered my question IP: Logged |

BUT PC133 RAM needs a 133 BUS on your motherboard to run at its best. Some 100 BUS motherboards cant handle PC133 RAM just like most 66 BUS motherboards cant handle PC100 RAM. NORMALLY the RAM speed goes hand in hand with your BUS speed. 66 BUS has PC66 RAM, 100 BUS has PC100 RAM and 133 BUS has PC133 RAM so on and so fourth.PC66 and above is SDRAM and anything below that is EDO or DRAM. And of course way back when they had other types of RAM for the 8086's, Comadors and acient Macs that my school still uses. [This message has been edited by ArgonV (edited 12-09-2000).] IP: Logged |

Argon, what you said is mostly true- but. . .How new the computer is can mess up the whole picture. The fastest CPU's run on either a 100MHZ or 133 MHZ bus depending on the clock speed of the CPU's. On some of the newer computers the mfg's are putting in MB's with a 133 MHZ bus (which will also run at 100). Depending on whether the CPU requires a 133 or 100 MHZ bus they set the bus speed as required. So the computer could have a 133MHZ capable MB, and 100MHZ SDRAM. They do have to make things dificult, don't they. Also, 100MHZ ram will run on most 66MHZ boards (LX or TX chipset)if the bios has been updated. 133 is exactly the opposite, it probably won't run on a LX or TX chipset MB. However, it will run at 66MHZ IF you have it on a 100MHZ capapble MB. The machine I'm using to write this has a MB that can support a 100MHZ bus (BX chipset) a 64MB PC100 stick, a 64MB PC133 stick, and the bus speed is set for 66MHZ since it has a Celeron in it. The machine runs without any problems. Talk about a topic that's about as clear as mud ------------------ "Where'd he GO!?!?" thunk-thunk-thunk-zing-OUCH That answered my question IP: Logged |

Jughead, my PC is almost exactly 2 years old to the day. It's a PII-350 with 64 MB's of SDRAM.IP: Logged |

If it's a PII 350, then it's running a 100MHZ front side bus. The PII 333 wast the last full blown pentium to use a 66MHZ bus (although celerons still do).You need a stick of PC100 SDRAM. As long as your machines not an HP, any good quality memory will work. Micron makes good ram at reasonable prices. If prices are high in your area, go to www.pricewatch.com and see if you can get what you need there. ------------------ "Where'd he GO!?!?" thunk-thunk-thunk-zing-OUCH That answered my question IP: Logged |

RAM is rather cheap here in Norway. Online that is. 2x64mb=about £40IP: Logged |

I posted in off-topic the other day (missed this post) about RAM prices. Just purchased a 128MB module for my PII 400. It was just under $60 from crucial.com (Micron) and they shipped it 2nd UPS for free. I actually ordered it on Friday night (Saturday morning) and received in Monday around noon.------------------
