I got this file with a .pif extension, and stupidly I opened it. My browsers crap out when I view threads, my printers don't print (.dll files are screwed somehow) SDOE won't run ( ) and I am thorougly pissed off. Of course I have no anti-viral software either, although I doubt it would have done much since I emailed the person who sent it to me and they said their anti-viral software didn't pick it up.I've never had a virus before, never succesfully reinstalled windows, so I am totallly green in this. How do you get rid of a virus? Please help! Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

Easiest way Werner-Go to download.com, dowmload and install the demo of norton antivirus. Once installed it will download the latest virus definitions. Use this to do a conmplete scan and it should get rid of the virus if it recognizes it. The problem with corrupted dlls may not be fixed. Sometimes it requires a virus recovery disk made prior to the infection to restore your system to normal. Reinstalling windows is easy, but there's no use doing it until you purge the virus. ------------------ "Where'd he GO!?!?" thunk-thunk-thunk-zing-OUCH That answered my question IP: Logged |

Hi. Get the latest version of any anti-viral software, install it and run it. You may need to use a friend's machine to update the virus list the anti-viral software has. Do this from the maker's web page. Of course, formatting your hard drive works too, but that's the very last resort. McAfee has an on line thing you can go to but you have to register with them. And don't open ANY attachments to e-mails even if you know who sent it to you. Especially ones that were created with Microsoft Office products. Hope this helps.IP: Logged |

Sounds to me like you're hosed. With that much going wrong, I wouldn't trust the machine even after the virus was supposedly cleaned. Copy off your important data and reformat.IP: Logged |
