Spanky here... Yep, In fact I read somewhere that computers havn't made businesses any more effeciant. Or maybe profitable. Something wacky anyways. I would lookup the source but I havn't a clue where I read it. IP: Logged |

hmmmm....I've read that a lot of the reason for the economic boom of the last 9 years in the US is that the use of computers in business is finally having a measurable impact on productivity, efficiency and profitablility. It's probably a lot to do with shifting to a service economy where computers have more impact. IP: Logged |

Slowing down from an incredibly long boom cycle to something more normal. This is sort of an apples-oranges comparison. When you introduce computers into a previously manual process, you're going to have to change the process. Sometimes substantially. That makes it difficult to compare the two. The people involved are doing different things than they used to. When I was writing an accounting/inventory control system, what we found that most of the biggest gains the stores saw was due to the consistency the computers enforce. Instead of each person doing things a little differently, and stuff falling through the cracks due to mistaken assumptions, the computer forced everyone to be on the same page. So, do you count that gain in efficiency to computers? IP: Logged |

Speaking as an engineer,Anyone who suggests that computers dont make life easier has never had to run tests that take hours or days on computer. By the way...Excel is by far MS's best product. IP: Logged |

Yeah, computers have made things incredibly more efficient. They have raised standards of production, allowed much better quality control, and opened markets that wouldn't exist otherwise. They have been great for business. The big myth is that these benefits will result in shorter work days or more vacation. People are expected to work just as much, and accomplish much more. Having said that, I'd rather be clicking most of the day than working in a coal mine or in a steel mill. IP: Logged |
