Does anyone know the record for the longest running computer without a reboot or shut down? I was just curious...

There's an archtypical story about a university computer that needed to be upgraded. This was in the '70s sometime, back when most jobs were submitted with punch cards. The operators stopped taking job submissions and let all the outstanding jobs finish running before shutting down the machine. The last job to come out was one that had been submitted five years earlier and had such a low priority that it basically never got any CPU cycles.

Dunno if that's true, but it makes a funny story.

Space.com had an aritcle today about NASA contacting Pioneer 6, the longest-running probe. It's been going for 35 years, so far. Of course, its computer has probably been rebooted a few times during that period, so it probably doesn't hold the record you're looking for.

Well... how about amongst the members of the community...

I had a Novell 3.1 server (on a 486/50) that was up for 2 years 26 days before a power outage took it down.

Anybody else?

Well the Schoolmusic.com NT server ran for 1.5 years with only two shut downs for upgrades. It was then upgraded to a 2 proc. machine and Windows2000, it has been up for 6 months now. I am sure it is no record, but it impresses me because at my last job we rebooted the NT server weekly or it died - and most people I know do indeed have a reboot schedule.

Our procy server it an old Aptiva LOL, it has been chugging away with no monitor or keyboard for 2 years now! I just rebooted it last week though because we "cleaned up" the cable mess - vacuuming out the cookie crumbs and stuff, you know
