How can I shut down all the programs that run in the background so that they don't use my system resorces while I am flying?I realize with Windows, it will never be perfect. I guess I am trying to get my computer to run efficient and as fast as possible. Thanks, ~Maaco~ IP: Logged |

Do you have Win98 or Win95?Down below in the lower right hand corner, there are little icons. Those icons stand for whats running. Just close them and those programs wont be running any more. If you have Win98, you can also go to Start -> Accessories -> System Tools -> and click on System Information. Then up at the top click on Tools and then System Configuration Utility. Then up at the top click on the Startup tab. Those are all the rest of the programs that are running. If you uncheck the ones you dont want, they wont be running on the next reboot of Win98. Please note that some programs MUST be running for Windows to still run properly. [This message has been edited by ArgonV (edited 11-22-2000).] IP: Logged |

Spanky here... K. What ArgonV said. AND if there is programs that you still want to run at startup but want to turn off for playing SDOE. Just hit. CTRL+ALT+DEL all at the same time. Then highlight and shut down everything in that list except for stuff you need. The only things windows needs is Explorer and Systray. If you want to fly online be sure to leave the connection running, Its rnapp or somethign if I remmeber correctly. And any joystick software if you need to run software for your stick. IP: Logged |

Hey Maaco, try a program called "End-It-All."If you'd like, I could even e-mail it to you. It's pretty handy, and is about 389kb zipped. E-mail is mk10@home.com ------------------ Mk10 Maj=225th= IP: Logged |

LoL Macco! Dont feel bad, I have my blonde moments too. Somehow, a program named "End-It-All" doesnt sound to pleasant for a computer. IP: Logged |

I do not use End It All myself, but so many people use and recommend it, it must have something going for it. I use the SysInfo Configuration Editor and nothing starts except Explorer and Systray...I usually fresh boot with 97% free. For Virtual Memory; the Conservative Swap File tweak is pretty unknown, but thanks to Mudshark I have tried it. If you have 256 Meg of RAM it may improve some things, regardless of whether you let Windows manage the swap file or set your own. Open the System.ini file through accessories, or at the Run window type 'sysedit' and select the system.ini file. Look for the section entitled [386 Enh]. In that section, add the line ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1 and save it. Do not do it if you don't feel comfortable editing system files...if you would like to see more info on this or other Windows tweaks, one good site is www.activewin.com ; for good links to a lot of great tweak and ideas for hardware/software stuff, try http://hardwarehell.com . I have found many useful tech links from this site....she covers almost every aspect of tech info links. Good luck; and consider EndItAll...too many use it successfully for it to be bad.

If you have 2 hard drives, put the virtual memory on the drive that doesn't have the windows OS. This speeds it up a little bit.Or if you have the bucks- get a SCSI card and SCSI drives. No matter how fast IDE drives get, they still have one strike against them when compared to SCSI. SCSI controllers have their own processor and take a lot of load off the CPU, IDE's controllers don't and chew up CPU time much more than SCSI's do. IP: Logged |
