"I flew the P-47, P-38, Bf 109, Fw 190, Spitfire and several other lesser known types and the P-51D was by far the best war machine; the Mustang would do for 8 hours what the Spit would do for 45 minutes" Chuck Yeager------------------ 7./JG3_Himdog out www.luftwaffe.net IP: Logged |

I think it's accurate to say that General Yeager is an American hero. He's well into his 70s now, but he still flies his Mustang around to some of the airshows. In fact, I saw him fly some acrobatics at the Oshkosh airshow a couple of summers ago, then I saw him up close after he parked and got out on the ground. It's incredible but the guy looks great. If I hadn't known who it was, I would've sworn he was only in his late 50s. He was being mobbed by fans, so I decided not to bother him, but it was nice to see him nonetheless. The funniest thing is the name on his plane. All the other P-51s have General so-and-so, or Colonel so-and-so written under the cockpit, but General Yeager's Mustang says "PFC Chuck Greenhill." What a guy. [This message has been edited by UniversalWolf (edited 11-18-2000).] IP: Logged |
