http://cnnfn.cnn.com/2000/11/14/technology/3dfx/ They are continuing to make chips but won't be selling their own boards anymore. That's ok, Nvidia rocks! The company plans to close its Juarez, Mexico, card manufacturing plant and remove itself from the business of building the graphics cards that reside in desktop PCs. This is an abrupt switch from the December 1998 takeover of STB Systems, which 3dfx heralded as a move that would put them in charge of their own destiny. Instead, that move -- combined with numerous production delays and supply problems -- has removed the company from its once-dominant position in the industry. (more at link above)
Damn, could have sworn I was still in the Off Topic area, but this is pretty big news so what the hay.

Yup, no 6000. I was really looking forward to that card. It will be made for industrial use but not for gamers. I have read where you can get one direct for $800, not sure it's true.Pete, we can leave this here for awhile than move it down to the "Off Topic" ------------------ Hawk Forum manager and bar keep http://rcwarbirds.com/ IP: Logged |

Hopefully, this will result in cheap older 3DFX cards for the poverty stricken.....Can't see the retailers wanting to hang onto stocks of these cards now that the word is out! IP: Logged |

It's simple for 3dfx 'Rampage' or bust. If they deliver the goods (on time) and give the market a card that is at least as good as the nv20 (I think that's the next nVidia offering) then 3dfx will survive. If not they will be in Chapter 11 by May of next year.I hope they survive because I want to see competition in the market place. Choice is good for the consumer, competition drives technology forward and prices lower. You only have to look at the impact that AMD has had on the CPU market. 18 months ago the cutting edge was a £500 P2-450. Now thanks to AMD it is a £400 TBird 1.2ghz. The last thing the graphics market needs is another bloated and complacent monopolistic giant like MS or Intel. ------------------ Yardstick painted this IP: Logged |

Spanky here... No offence to Nvidia fans, but I love 3dfx. I love SDOE glide, its the only way to fly. I'm hoping they get back to basics and make that rampage a smoking chip. I had heard somthign like it was going to have a voxel accelerator, Hello delta force. I know my banshee was one of the best parts I ever got for this machine. It saved it from the brink. I was donw to just surfing, game playing without it is not possible. IP: Logged |

They also made more money when they had the Creative Labs, Guillemont and others producing and marketing thier cards. It provided for more competition between the same chipset, let alone the graphics market.... I say it is a good move for them. and Us. ;}------------------ Mirthain=FC= IP: Logged |
