HIGH SPEED INTERNET MY A$$!!! I'm not even getting a FRACTION of the speeds that I was getting with cable! THIS BLOWS! Rember when I said I was getting in the low 50's for ftp://lynx.inertiagames.com/pub/Planepack5.3.zip with cable?.... well, I'm only getting 15K/sec with ADSL! I just as well just save my 30 bucks a month and go with free web dial up. Heck, I'll probably get faster D/L speeds with them. I'm sick of this "High speed internet" BS.

Jag, I just ran a test on my cable modem. It's peak hours now just after dinner and I get only 65 K / second downloading that file. However, going to microsoft and downloading the age of empires 2 demo i get 260 K / second. Try it here:

Jag, what is your DSL rated at? I have 640kb download with mine (per Verizon). It also uses "PPPOE", which eats some bandwidth. In the end I get about 60K/second.
15K per second could easily be the server. Some servers max out at that speed or slower.

Ok, I'm getting 56 K/sec with AOE2..... Starting to wish I kept cable.

I'm rated at 1536 Kbps downstream, 512 Kbps upstream.

Well, I have cooled down since last night, but i'm still kinda upset. I'm gonna give the techies a call, see if there is anything that they can do.

Jag, look at the tools available on www.dslreports.com. In particular, there is a registry setting which can really speed up your speeds. You should definatly be getting much higher than you are. Also, DSL reports has forums for all the popular venders, so you can see if other people are having your same problems.
Good luck.

Spanky here...

Jag, I have 960k service and it tops out at around 130k on good servers, time doesn't seem to matter much.

You should be getting quite a bit higher then that.

I downloaded win98 patch from www.speedguide.net and it doubled my download rates.

Really DOUBLED.

Try a patch and then call tech.

Remember though 15k is triple 56k, I know lots of people that would be happy with that.

Heck I would pay 30 a month just to be able to use my phone at the same time, since I used to play $30 a month for 56k.

Spanky here...

K i'm downloading that AOE2 demo.

I get 116k, not bad if you ask me, not no 260k like tail but good enough, specially cause dsl is the fastest you can get in town right now.

My boot times slowed alot when i put in the network card, I asked sympatico if there was a fix and they said no.

I asked on a sympatico users forum and got the answer the next day. Plugged in the IP numbers into my network card and now it boots like a dream.

LOTHAR THANK YOU!!!!! The registery patch worked like a charm!.... you know, I have always thought that my speed problems might be because of something in the reg. I'm getting 60+ on that plane pack file, and 160 on that AOE2 demo..... SWEET!!!..... now, I wonder if I should try Spanky's patch..... Is there an uninstall for it spanky? I don't want it messing up my system, now that I got it up and running.

Wow..... this is SO cool!

The registry fix and Spanky's patch are probably the same thing. There is a good speed tester at:
http://computingcentral.msn.com/topics/bandwidth/speedtest.asp

Also, try DUMeter. It shows all the bandwidth you are using through TCPIP. You can be downloading several files and it tells you the total K per second. Measuring this way ensures that your connection is saturated since you are using several servers.
http://www.hageltech.com/dumeter/

If you are getting within 10% of your theoretical maximum, consider the job done. Often it isn't possible to get any faster.

Spanky here...

I would agree that both patches if not the same are probly pretty close.

PS. I love saturating my connection.

LOL spanky

Ok, here's what I'm getting with the DU meter...

I am downloading 2 files, AOE2, and a game from happy puppy. AOE2 starts fast, but is constantly slowing down (probably a bit of it is still in my cache). It averages around 25K/sec though. The other demo stayed constant..... thats according to the Netscape D/L windows, according to DU meter, the my speeds jumped from 10-144K/sec....... What could be wrong?..... My speeds are kinda slow now too....

And this is just D/Ling 1 file.....I started D/Ling at the big spike on the left, then took a screen shot just as it finished. Shouldn't it be more stable than that?

Jag, the internet is a funny thing
First of all, make sure DUmeter is set to 'display average values'. You should be seeing a solid block of red in DUmeter. The picture you sent shows your speed being all over the place.
Also, servers can be fast or slow depending on thier load and their connection. Its really variable. I'd try downloading something else, and see if you can get DUmeter to show a solid, consistant DL speed.

oohh yea, I'm finding the internet is hilarious right now...... hehehe

Ok, I have set Du Meter to show average values. The first shot is D/Ling a game off of download.com, the second is downloading a game off combatsim.
