Well...being one of the few New Yorkers here...this one is especially exciting for me. Granted my team has won the last 2 (and I have been a Yankees fan since I was 3...so no bandwagon jumping here...I suffered through the 80's and early 90's when they really sucked!!!)-- but this is the first time the Mets and Yanks have met up in a Series...the only other subway series that I know of (or at least the most recent) was that of the Mets and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Go Yanks!!!------------------ Brought to you by the campaign for a better Dauntless! Jeeves =FC= IP: Logged |

Jeeves, either you had a typo, a Senior Moment, or you're not as big a fan as you thought. When the Mets first became a team there was no Brooklyn Dodgers...the Dodgers had already moved to LA. In fact the Mets were created to give NY a National League team to replace the Dodgers. So there could not have been a Mets/Booklyn Dodger subway series - to say nothing of the fact that they are both National League teams and could never play each other in a World Series. Yankee's fan huh? Well...I won't hold it against you. Nobody's perfect. I'm torn. I'm a National League fan but since the Mets beat my Giants in the playoffs so I'm not much of a Met's fan either. My only reason for wanting the Met's to win is that I can say that it took the World Champs to knock out the Giants. IP: Logged |

Well, with the Yankees, you expect them to win, and are surprised when they lose. With the Mets, you expect them to lose, and are surprised when they win. Being surprised with a win is more fun. I'm routing for the Mets. IP: Logged |

Well, the last subway series I believe was Yankees - Dodgers in 1956 ( Don Larsen's perfecto highlighted that ). Growing up, I was a die hard Yankees fan - 1962 saw a new era for me. Performance of the Giants in the 62 series won me over, and I have been a Giants' fan since. Also loved the old Mets, and part of my 19th birthday present was the miracle Mets 1969 Series win over the allegedly invincible Orioles. But the Giants have been my team since 62, and this season's ending was a large disappointment to me. ( I HATE Mike Piazza - wish he was a Giant!! hehe )So, I have to pull for the Mets....but a little nostalgic part of me wouldn't mind seeing the Yankees win....for Roger and the Mick, Whitey, Yogi, Bobby, Tony, Elston, Moose, Hector, Billy, Clete....well, I've been a baseball fan all my life... Just hope it is a classic, and worthy of some of it's predecessors. I do prefer the NL, as the DH to me is not baseball, but when ya pick up the bat and strap on the glove - as I still do occasionally, but not in competition since 1995 - it is still all baseball!

Jerry...I guess not so much a senior moment... more like a brain fart As I said...I have been a fan since I was three (1973)...so I never really looked that far back in time...I just heard that factoid on the radio and subbed in the Mets for the Yanks. Absolutely, Jeeves! There is much history in that great game, and much of it has been made in the last 30 years. It is easy enough to confuse things today, because we are bombarded constantly by media hype, where us 'elder' folks had to make do with The Game Of The Week and radio and Topps cards and books and magazines.I sometimes wonder if my love of the game would be as strong as it is, if it hadn't been for the - IMO - best baseball announcer ever; Dizzy Dean. He and PeeWee Reese used to make those Saturday games so much fun...anyone else remember that? Of course, the Yankees were usually featured...hehe. Like rooting for US Steel, it was once said. Sorry...waxing nostalgic again...

...and I'll pull for the Mets 'cause that way I can say that only the best team in baseball could beat my Cardinals!I still remember sitting in a bar watching the '77 Series, where Reggie hit three in one game. No, I wasn't quite old enough to be there! And I guess I could thank the Yanks for beating the Royals three times in a row to send Whitey over to St. Louis. That began a glorious run for the "Runnin' Rabbit" Cardinals, and was a lot of fun watching in the 80's. I was so depressed I wasn't sure I'd watch the Series this year...I know, I know, chin up and overall love of baseball should perservere and all, but hey, I was bummed... Anyway, glad I watched last night, and tonight with Rocket pitching...well, I doubt whether I'll be able to stay away. Too bad he's not pitching at Shea though...heh-heh-heh.... ------------------ Mk10 Maj=225th= [This message has been edited by Mk10 225th (edited 10-22-2000).] IP: Logged |

nealg, I remember Dizzy Dean and the game of the week well. It was about the only baseball we would get to see.Once there was a pretty slow game going on (Didn't have instant replays etc. to fill in the time then.) Anyway Dizzy got to telling this story to fill in the time. This story went on for about 3 innings with Dizzy telling the story part of the time and announcing baseball the rest of the time. It went something like this. When he was a boy they were very poor. Sometimes all they had to eat was what they could hunt. Dizzy's dad would give him two rocks and tell him to go and get two squirrls with the rocks or he would give him a whipping. Dizzy would go out into the woods and hit two squirrls in the head with the rocks and bring them home for supper. That was Dizzys version of how he learned to pitch. After doing this a few times the squirrles that were left got smarter and started going around on the other side of the tree from Dizzy. Dizzy couldn't hit them and kept getting whippings from his dad. Finally he learned to curve the rock around the trunk of the tree and kill the squirrle. This was how Dizzy learned to throw such a good curve ball. Funniest story I ever heard when he told it. IP: Logged |

Thank you, Smokey!! I was hoping I wasn't the only one here who remembered! Yes, there was never really such a thing as a 'slow' game when Dizzy was working; when he didn't have ya laughing, he had ya grinning. All pitchers 'was purty good hittin' pitchers'; a pitcher could swing at a pick off move, and Diz would say things like 'Wal, PeeWee, he had a right good cut at that one...this boy knows how to swang a bat.' Thanks for relating that story...it took me back. I swear I could almost hear him drawling it out, as the Yankees were batting around against another hapless Washington Senator pitcher...yes, Virginia, there really was a baseball team in D.C., for many years! Anyway, nothing against many of the modern announcers, but there will never be another Dizzy. SALUTE! To our youth, baseball, and ol' Diz!

Sorry, Mk10! We did forget to mention that, and it was a true injustice - my apologies, to you, the Cards, and the Dean family. Yes, he was, and one of the greatest pitchers to have ever played in the major leagues. Until Denny McLain in 1968, he was the last major league pitcher to win 30 games, and he did it against some of the best hitters to ever play in the majors also. In 1934, his 30+ win season, he and his brother Paul ( who won 19 games ) accounted for, I believe, nearly 60% of the Cards total team wins for the year and the pair nearly single handedly won the Series that year against the Mickey Cochrane-led Detroit Tigers.Forgive me if my figures aren't accurate - I am doing this straight from memory, and it isn't as good as it used to be! Dizzy was, and is, a legend in more than one field and was a major influence on this old boy's love of baseball. ------------------ nealg=FC=

My grandfather told me a story about the Dean brothers. I don't know if it's true or not but he told it for the truth.St. Louis was in a double header with Dizzy pitching the first game and Daffy (Paul) pitching the second game. Dizzy pitched a complete game winning the game. Daffy ran into trouble in the latter innings of the second game and Dizzy came in to relieve him. The Card's also won the second game. Would be interesting if someone could verify this. IP: Logged |

Sounds plausible. Those early baseball players were iron men. In the first part of the century there was a pitcher who pitched both ends of a double header - complete games!IP: Logged |

Yeah, your right Jerry. Even in the 50's and 60's pitchers were pretty much expected to go the distance in a game. If relief did occur it was usually in the 8th or 9th inning.IP: Logged |

I believe that is factual, as I recall several mention of that game. Believe it was in that pennant year of 1934...likely as not, I have the account in one of my old baseball reference books, and may even still have a copy of the box scores from those games...though that isn't too likely. ( I have been a fan of a game called APBA baseball since age 11, and used to research seasons by looking up old newspaper accounts and box scores at the library..hehe, I am old, but not THAT old! ).I see the Mets got one back tonight, and ended the Yanks consecutive game postseason winning streak, as well as El Duque's. Good for the Metsies, as Casey used to say!

Ok, here's something I've always wondered. I see tonight's game starts at 8:18 PM, EST. What moron decides these start times for games? You would think they would start at 8:15 or 8:30 or something like that. Any- body know?IP: Logged |

Something to do with radio/TV coverage. It allows actual game coverage to start at the quarter hour with a few minutes for commercials and/or lineup rundowns. Same with football - actual kick-off is never scheduled for an even hour or half hour. Baseball is just a little more honest about it and gives actual "game" start times.IP: Logged |

Hey neal, I've played a little APBA a while back. I was never smart enough to play the "master" version, but I've got a hell of a lot of complete season's cards, as I would pick them up when they'd offer the sets discounted when I was on the APBA mailing list. It's pretty neat. I haven't played in years, but I started scoring games I'd play on a baseball scorecard. I thought it was kind of fun that way, and even easier and faster than using the regular APBA score sheets. My favorite teams are the '34 Cards, the '82 Cards, the '53 Dodgers, and the '19 White Sox. Gosh, do we need a real life or what? ------------------ Mk10 Maj=225th= IP: Logged |

LOL Mk10!! Who woulda thought - what's the odds, WWII prop sims and APBA??I had em all at one time, every season from 61 thru 69, then nearly every season from the 70's. I switched to the computer version a few years back, and like a dummy, gave most of the cards away. Though to be fair, the guy I gave them to was a youngster and is still playing today. My favorite teams are the 27 Yanks, the 61 Yanks, the 62 Giants, the 19 Sox, and the 08 Cubbies. So many years of fun...and hey, I did the same thing with the scoring!!
