Spanky here...

Hi guys, been having these problems for a while, and i know i can solve them by just reinstalling windows but i don't have the time right now and would like to put it off for a long weekend.

So heres the problems

#1. some dumbass set up multiple users on my system for some reason and i want to get back to only one, right now during the boot it asks for a password. So to get going i hit cancel and contiue the boot process.

How do I get back to how it was?

#2 Something got really messed a while back and i have been just living with it but it gets more annoying all the time.

Everytime I restart or boot the computer tries to start EVERYTHING in my root dir. EVERYTHING. it tries to start the config.sys and opens up a dos prompt window and all kinds of crazy stuff, even 3dsmax since theres an associated file in the root. oh yeah and any sort of text file pops up in notepad.

anyways its insane, its happened to me before and i can't remember if i got rid of it or i just reinstalled.

any ideas on why its doing that and how to stop it short of a reinstall?

one more hehe.

k anyone know of a good reason i should hunt down a copy of win98se instead of just reinstalling win98?

thanks alot for any help guys.

You may wanna try to open your Config.sys file in notepad and delete or put a rem command in front of anything you don't want there. Go to your Windows\Start menu\Startup folder and delete all progs you don't want to run at startup. That's all I can think of now. Someone else will have to answer about the user thing. Hope this helps!

Look in the c:/windows or c:/windows/system directory and look for the user names of the people who have accounts .pwl (.pws?), anyways, just delete those files and the accounts won't have a login password anymore.

It sounds like someone designated your root directory as the startup directory. That's easy to do with TweakUI. Do you have that installed? If so, it'll be in your Control Panel. If not, it's in a folder somewhere on your Win98 CD (Extras or Addons or something like that.)

I'm sure there's a registry entry to change it back, but I don't know what it is off the top of my head.

BTW, the way to get rid of the sign-on screen is in Control Panel|Users.

I suggest you install TweakUI from your Win98 CD. It has a lot of little useful utilities. And it'll let you set your Startup folder back to where you want it.

Ok got rid of that user BUT the user name password window still pops up.

((*&Y%R&R%*#$*&$%#&*()*&#$*R&#%R*&

SO DAMN ANNOYING. I can't just turn my box on and walk away for a sec while it boots and then come back ready to play.

I have to babysit the damn thing. Through the user/pass popup and then through all the programs starting up and shut them all down.

Man this sucks ass.

I'll let ya know how the TweakUI thing works but I kinda doubt it. I did a tour through the reg and saw a spot to specify the start up dir and it wasn't root.

Its going to be time for a reinstall. Sucks ass. Windows Blows. I can't wait for a true gamers OS, someone has to do it someday.

You will always get the login screen as long as the computer has a network defined for it. Oddly, I don't get that with Win98 SE and it ticks me off to have to log out and log back in just to get some files off my other computer.

Spanky, find the "name".pwl file (where "name" is whatever name pops up by default in the sign on window) in the windows folder and delete it. Now restart windows. When the signon comes up just hit OK, you will be prompted to enter/confirm a windows password - leave it completely blank and hit OK again. Now when you boot you should not see the signon window.

If this fails then go into Control Panel:Network and make sure that the Primary Network Logon is set to "Windows Logon" and not "Client For Microsoft Windows".

Actually, as I think about it you should do the second part first - make sure your not set to "Client for Microsoft Windows" then restart and do the first part.

This should do it.... if not then ya got me.
