Warning to gun owners, Guns on your Tax FormsSubject: FW: Friendly warning to gun owners Gun owners beware! Senate Bill SB-2099 will require us to put on our 2000 1040 federal tax form all guns that you have or own. It may require fingerprints and a tax of $50 per gun. This bill was introduced on Feb. 24. This bill will become public knowledge 30 days after it is voted into law. This is an amendment to the Internal Revenue Act of 1986. This means that the Finance Committee can pass this without the Senate voting on it at all. The full text of the proposed amendment is on the U.S. Senate homepage. http://www.senate.gov/ You can find the bill by doing a search by the bill number. (SB-2099) You know who to call; I strongly suggest you do. Please send a copy of this e-mail to every gun owner you know to help STOP this bill!! ------------------

Now, that's some SHIT, man. Glad I'm not in the US! What would have happened if I was going to pay for my shotgun, .22 rifle, Beretta and Colt-Browning 11.25mm??? There wouldn't be more money to buy PC games for at least a year. I would miss Il-2 IP: Logged |

Looks like it's only handguns. And it looks like a one-time tax per handgun, not $50/year.I definately have mixed feelings about the proposed bill. The Founding Fathers quite explicitely wanted a well-armed militia to keep the government in check. The only problem is that the majority of the people who arm themselves these days are bullies, crooks and whackos. IP: Logged |

Mighty, what are you basing your "bullies, crooks and whackos" statement on? I don't agree...certainly not the majority of gun owners. That's like saying the majority of drivers are drunks because so many auto accidents are DUI related. In fact, if you read the FBI's Uniform Crime Report statistics, the vast majority of gun deaths result from the family or friends of the victim just grabing a gun in a moment of anger and using it, or from accidents...not by criminals or psychopaths. The problem is not with the character of the majority who own guns, but that there are just too many guns, too accessable, too easy to get and too easy to abuse. I'm afraid our nature has not evolved to the point where we can have lethal weapons lying around all over the place and not have serious consequences. If it were just the bullies, crooks and whackos causing the problem we could probably address the issue without having to attack the rights of the majority. IP: Logged |

Specific issue aside, give this inch and they will start collecting on that mile. Weather it is in the constitution or not, it is a certain unalienable right.------------------ -Sv =FC= WWI in SDOE!

All the more reason to buy unmarked, untraceable handguns. They just cost a lot of money, that's all. Bills like this just raise the price even more.IP: Logged |

I have to side with Jerry on this one. I don't feel like a bullie, crook, or whacko. The shooting sports that I participate in give me some of the most enjoyable times of my life. Legislation like this does not help to reduce crime at all. In fact there are some towns that enacted laws that requested that you be armed. Crime went down in these towns! This seems unconstitutional to me. It's time to join the NRA... weaselIP: Logged |

This seems Very unconstitutional! I think it’s just a way to do a country wide census on who owns what for further action to be made down the road if this gets passed into law. (Like the dream police coming to your home, taking your firearms, baseball bats, sling shots, garden hoses...) I just don't like the way this is looking, it seems to me the "man" just will try anything to put the people down. The American public should NEVER have to give up it’s arms to THE GOVERNMENT THAT WORKS FOR THEM! If that day does come it will be with the death of democracy and the spawning of socialism, America will be no more, and the revolution will begin! VIVA LA REVOLUTION! Or … I might just need a nice ice-cream cone. Happy, happy, happy, thoughts Baaa, Baaaa, Baaaa, "Stay in the lines." Baaa, Baaa, Baaa…... IP: Logged |

Aside from any debate on whether this is a good or just bill, I think it should be noted that this is not "law' yet. It's merely a bill being sent to committee. It has about as much legal effect now as does our posting on this page.Granted, if you fear this sort of legislation it does bode ill for you that somebody actually proposed the bill at all. However, if you don't like the bill, you can rest fairly sure that it will be vehemently opposed by the gun lobby. I seriously doubt it will pass. However you feel about the issue though, I encourage you to participate if you are a US citizen. Contact your senator and let him or her know in writing your position. I've done it before on committee bills in the US congress, and at the state level. If anything, its fun to get official letterhead back in the mail. You can get the info on your rep and his/her address online of course.

Ack! That came out wrong. I must have gotten distracted and posted it without finishing my thought. I'm also a gun-owner. I certainly don't consider myself a bully, crook or whacko :-)Let's see if I can clarify my point. I think owning guns for sport is perfectly acceptable. But owning guns for home defense is, IMHO, irresponsible. I'm familiar with the stats showing that you're more likely to shoot yourself than an intruder. I don't ever want to live in a house with a "home defense" gun owner. My rifles are absolutely never loaded in the house for any reason. I don't own any handguns, yet. Back to the founding fathers' underlying purpose for the second amendment. As I see it, the only people who own guns for the express purpose of making up an armed militia are the whackos I was trying to refer to. Does that make more sense? IP: Logged |

I don't own a gun, but I'd like the right to buy equal armament as the military is able to buy. That was part of the intent of the Bill of Rights - to allow citizens to maintain their arms in case of tyranical powers seize control of the government. They just don't want us to own guns to begin with just in case we find out what they really have been up to. Ok, not really, but there has been a lot of dumb laws passed that really only make it hard for honest people to arm themselves to defend against the people who aren't honest. A criminal can go to any street corner and find out who has guns for sale out of the back of their card in 5 minutes. Pow, he is armed. Any honest guy has to jump through a million hoops and subject themselves to big brother monitoring in order to buy a gun. In an odd comparison, since 80+ people have been linked to tire related deaths, do we have to start getting licenses to buy tires now? Or since some people are allergic to bee's we need to kill them all if they don't have a license to be a bee? It is kind of odd to think that after jumping through all of these hoops, criminals are going to get a gun in 5 minutes. The tax is just a reason for them to pay for their special interest spending projects. It serves no real purpose. If congress wanted to help, they would limit their property and dollar incomes to what the government pays them anually - no slush funds, they would be under full financial disclosure (if it is money related, disclose it) electronically, and they would limit their terms to be the same as the president - either 2 terms or 8 years. Guns are the least of our problems. Thank the media for their hunt for easy prey as opposed to watching the watchers (government). IP: Logged | |
