Hey guys, I want to do something special for my dad and so I would like to find him a picture of F-4 Phantoms in Thunderbirds scheme. He is a former F-4 pilot and has been looking for this for a while, so does anyone know where to find a picture or video? Thanks.

Spanky here...

Now if you really wanted to go all out. You can find guys who do custom paintings, and have a plane from your dads former squad painted into a scene.

Did they ever use F-4s for the Thunderbirds? I thought they used F-5/T-38s and then F-16s.

F-4s were used by the Blue Angels.

You bet they did! They were very pretty (or so i'm told). And they were also used by the Blue Angels.

The first plastic model I made as a kid was the F4 as a thunderbird. I wouldn't say they looked that great though. Kinda fat, but I think the F4 is one of the most interesting jets to look at.

The most beautiful jet to look at by far is the T38, also used by the thunderbirds.

"Many of those who worked with the F-4 Phantom II thought the aircraft was unattractive. That triggered a variety of nicknames, such as: Double Ugly, Rhino, Flying Anvil, Big Iron Sled and the Louisville Slugger. The aircraft also became known as "the world's leading distributor of MiG parts" in tribute to its record of downing 280 MiG aircraft. During the Vietnam War, the Phantom shot down its first MiG-17 on June 5, 1967, and its last MiG-21 on Jan. 8, 1973. "

Da Thundabirds jets:
They started in May 1953 with F-84G Thunderjet, then on Feb. 7th, 1955, they got the F-84F Thunderstreak. May 1956 saw them getting F-100C Super Sabres. In 1964 they got the "Lead Sled," F-105B Thunderchief. On May 9th that year, one of the 'Sleds disintegrated, the Thunderbirds were grounded, until two months later, when they converted to F-100D, until 1969 when they got the F-4E, which they held on to until 1974 when some dicks from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries saw the 'Birds perform, and thought they spent a bit much fuel trundling around, so they converted to T-38's with slightly better fuel economics. In 1982 they got F-16A's, and in 1983 F-16C's.

I was at an air show where a Blue Angel F-4 crashed. No injuries, luckily.

On landing, apparently the instruments indicated the gear was down and locked, when in fact it wasn't. So the plane ended up on its belly and slid off the end of the runway. The pilot punched out safely.

I was young at the time and couldn't see over the crowd. Plus, I happened to be turned away just then, so I didn't actually see it happen.

My dad said he flew out of that airport the next day, and the plane had been hauled back to the hanger and had been stripped of its Blue Angels paint job, already.

I was also at an airshow where there was a crash, I was about 11 at the Confederate Air Force Air Show and getting my picture taken in the cockpit of an A-8 when a stunt plane did a loop that started too low, came in and smaked onto the field, the man was probably killed instantly.

I had an F14 prang on the runway at Kunsan..I was working local and it was in the middle of an excercise. We had these navy F14s doing some 'bomb cat' trials at chick-do (some korean bombing range).

this guy came in and slammed it down hard on the runway..his gear collapsed and he went skidding down the runway. those navy guys are hard on them planes...i guess they are so used to that carrier stuff. anyway, i forgot that i had a shitload of f16s on final...so i looked over and saw them coming down. we were ASLAR that day so that means the scope dopes downstairs had all the jets on their freq...so i hit the red light and told them all on guard freq that the runway was hosed. so they all got diverted to osan. the OG was pissed..here we are in the middle of a big ass excercise, and some navy twit takes out the runway (it was spawled for about 5000 feet of it) and half the wing got diverted. (GEE, imagine what would happen in a war when the runway gets taken out with half the wing stranded...LOL)..

anyway, that wasnt a very good crash...the guys got out of the jet and everything was cool. thats a good thing

but my older bro was a 'troll at nellis too. he was in the tower when an f15 pranged on base to one of the runways...i cant remember if the pilot made it out alive or not. he has pics of the wreck...it was right near the perimeter road too.

if you ever meet and older military controller, ask him if he/she has seen any crashes...some of them have some awesome stories of crashes they have seen.

in fact, i worked for one of the guys that was in the tower at pope when that f16 hit the c130 and killed all of those guys on the ground........it was a really messed up situation there.

Those times is when a squad of Harriers are nice to have. They need a "runway" of 50m2!
