Hi, I am planning on going to Australia in mid January for a week (I'll be missing the Olympics right?). I want to see a bit of the outback and a bit of the rain forest. Is there one place I can go to see these within reasonable distance from either? I probably can only afford a week there, then off to NZ for two weeks (three?) I have a friend there I can stay with (the worse part is, she has a female flatmate or two ). Anyways, I am looking to see a weeks worth of Australia and need ideas. Thanks in advance. IP: Logged |

Good to see whirlwind !Where abouts are ya flying in to ? Which capital cities are ya going to ? We need this to 'set up your itinery' BTW... I'm in Canberra, Bryan Russel is in Sydney (I think), Biggles (not Biggles3) is near Brisbane and Spyder is over near Perth. Doh..oh yeah ... Thunder is at Wagga Wagga (now find that on ya map !). Let us know mate and we can give ya a hand. e.g. If I was in your position I'd get to Cairns in far north Queensland (it has an international airport I think). From there you can get to the Jungle/Rainforest on the east coast and the bush just west of there. Cheers

I've been told that if I want to see the outback, to avoid Sydney or Melbourne (oddly, those are the only to places I could find to fly into ). That 297 mile long train ride looks interesting, if I had a week after I landed to rest up for it . Where ever I fly into, I hope to be able to see as much of Australia as possible. I might have to study up some, to make sure I avoid the usual tourist trappings. Thanks for the offer, any suggestions? I would like to see some bush (er, the vegetation kind) and some of the rain forest there. I know I can't approach Australia like a European tourist approaches the US - I know I can't see all 4 coasts in 2 days and everything in between . I love it when I have a bud planning a 4 day trip to the US and wants to see Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, LA, DC, and a half other dozen cities. IP: Logged |

Well I'd say go for Cairns then. Do a search for it under Yahoo or something, or see your travel agent. It has heaps of jungle near by and not far away there's the outback ... Remember the movie 'Sniper' with that guy (the SGT) out of 'Platoon' ? well, if ya do there was a train set in the middle of Panama or something - that was actually shot at Cairns .... ...and there's heaps of 'bush' closer to town around those parts too ..... Good luck... if ya get stuck drop me a line via email... I have a sister up that way, so we should be able to round up more info for ya. Be careful Whirl. I've heard the bite of what most folks think in the US as "common" animal and bugs are frequently fatal "down under."House flies, frogs, all snakes, and even some docile looking creatures like squirrels and hamsters, all pack a fatal dose of venom that can paralyze, and even kill. At least that's what Spyder tells me. ------------------ Mk10 Maj=225th= IP: Logged |

That is why I am looking also at a 4-5 day scooba clase . I found a good day trip to see some of the rainforest, and a place that has a 3 day Australian 'Dude' rance (they call it a 'station' I think). I am debating the scuba school as it might be over the top price wise ($400 US), but how often do you get a chance to swim the barrier reefs? Thanks for your concern, and it does remind me to pick up a book before I go on the local creatures that like eating people IP: Logged |

Well if ya do go up north....like Mk said...watch out for: 'wait a while' bush (a vine in the jungle with sets of hooks every few inches....if they latch on to ya you'll have to wait a while to get unhooked) 'gimpy' bush (has leaves about 7-8 inches long, shaped like a heart, with cerated edges. It's covered with fine hairs...if they touch ya skin it feals like fire....I know of a yank marine who whiped his bum with one of these - he was desperate - he died from the pain/shock) 'rats' (big mothers..about 2ft long !) 'drop bears'(possums that have a tendancy to drop on ya head from a great height) 'snakes' (red belly blacks, king browns, tigers and vipers... oh and the sea snakes....the most venomous in the world) and then there's the spiders that eat birds..... But have fun ....... Cheers, AGAS 5

Heck Lads,Even our SCUBA guys are becomming quite proficient at killing tourists. Basic SCUBA course cost me AUD$ 300. Remember not to panic... and remember to breath. (some people seem to forget these two rules.) Cairns is probably the place to go. For the life of me, I cannot suggest any better. IP: Logged |

I went on an Aussie trip for the USAF about 1 1/2 years ago. Went to Alice Springs (in the center of the country) and wow was it barren. Then we went to Sidney and just had a blast. What a great, friendly, clean as heck place!I'd go back in a second given the chance. One thing, probably the best advice I can give you. When out in the bush, and you are getting up and dressed ALWAYS shake your boots out (personally I turn mine upside down and SLAM them into the ground a few times). You never know what critters can find their way in there. I've known people who've had scorpions in theirs. Not fun.
