I've got a strange problem with the VGA Version of Red Baron I.1) No sound effects. I get the music, i.e. funeral dirge when you die but no engine sound, no machine gun chatter during the actual game. I have the EGA version of the game and it has the appropriate sound effects. I've checked and all the sound options are on and in the setup, I chose the Soundblaster option. 2) At certain points during the game, the fps just slows down to the point where I effectively have something akin to a slide projector. I have a Celeron 366 so it should be more than able to handle this game. Plus, I've been playing Aces Over Europe, the Aces 1940 (Battle of Britain) campaign where there are regularly around 30 planes in the air at the same time with no noticeable slow-down in the frame rate. I'd appreciate any help or suggestions. I really like the old Red Baron game (I also have and play Red Baron II/3D) but w/o the sound effects, it loses something. Flash IP: Logged |

Are you runing this is a true DOS enviorment? If so you may not have your sound card drivers installed for DOS in the autoexec.bat file. As for the slow down I have no clue. I too have played RBI and it is a fun game!IP: Logged |

I'm running RB from windows. I've also tried running it from the MS-DOS prompt. they both result in the no sound effects glitch. I haven't tried running it in true DOS as my computer has been acting up recently whenever I try to restart it in DOS.The slowdown glitch doesn't make any sense to me. If anything, I should be having problems with things going too fast. P.S.: Thanks for all the Aces Over Europe leads. History has been repeating itself in the Aces 1940 campaign - flying a Bf 109E, I attacked what I thought was a Hurricane and ended up getting shot up by the rear turret of a Defiant! IP: Logged |

Install RBI in true DOS. Run the setup and and select Soundblaster compatible. Then go to windows and run it in a DOS prompt. What kind of soundcard do you have anyhow? Also make sure the sound is turned on in the game. This should be under Prefences in the main menu. Its also ben know that old DOS games tend to decrese the sound volume when running from a windows DOS prompt so try turning up your volume really high. The only thing I can figure about the slow down is that do you have your Windows setup to handle virtual memory on its own or did you configure it?You still havent gotten used to what planes look like at a certain range? Do you have the graphics up all the way? Press F10 while your playing and make sure the graphic sliders are all the way to the right and that Tall Res is enabled. I tried turning up the volume all the way up already and I made sure the sound was on. When I setup the game, I set it for 'soundblaster' - don't know what sound card I have but that setting has worked on all my other games...As for figuring out how planes in AOE look like - yep, figured it out. Mainly comes down to color - different nationalities have different color schemes. It's easier in the Aces 1940 Campaign since all the British planes are all tan colored while the Germans are all dark green... I try out your suggestions. Thanks. IP: Logged |

Oh, yeah - I haven't touched anything regarding the configuration of virtual memory - at least I don't think I have. What should they be set at (assuming this is the cause of the slow down) Flash IP: Logged |

Set it to 'let Bill Gates manage it" or set it to 10% to your total HD space. IP: Logged |

On the slowdown, does it happen about 20 minutes in? If so, do you have Microsoft Word or Office installed? The Word Fast Finder has a setting to tell it not to index your disk if you're doing something, but I've found that it ignores that setting. After about 20 minutes it starts indexing and brings most machines to their knees. The way to fix that is look in your Startup folder and delete Fast Find. IP: Logged |

Yeah, I have MS Office installed. What does Fast Finder do? Anyway, I'm not sure if that's the culprit here...Red Baron I VGA is the only one that's affected. And it happens right away...as soon as I start the mission after a couple of turns, it tuuuurrrrnnnnssss rrrreeeeaallll ssssllloowwww. By the way, this 'glitch' happens intermittently, i.e. it comes and goes. This has never happened in the other Sierra flight sims. that I have.IP: Logged |

Yea, I have a sound problem with Aces of the Deep. A Sierra product too. I finaly got it to install but now when trying to launch it, a window comes up and tells me that it can't "initialize sound" error on line something, something, and dumps me to Desktop. I can't seem to get an answer out thier Tech support and I don't know where to go from here -=BAB=- Gunner IP: Logged |
