Topic: Anyone using satellite net access?

I was thinking about getting a satellite internet connection since thats about the only high speed connection they have out in the sticks where I live. I was just wondering if anyone is using one and how it went for online play. I know a sat link is going to hit you with an extra 250-300ms ping up front but I don't know how it would work for real. Thanks, Bryan IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. Hi man. What kind of net access do you have right now? I personally would be very wary of that extra 250-300 ping. since thats the ping of most people online. You would have the ping of someone in aus. I'm guessing you know how it works right? Its sat down but reg 56k up. At least it was last time I checked it out. Theres supposed to be a world sat net coming out thats up and down and in lower ping because the sats are low orbit. We shall see though cause they said around 2004. Theres another option you might want to check out If your not too worried about ping. That is a multilink connection. You get a second phone line and account with your ISP and dial up with both 56k modems at once and double your bandwidth. I think I have heard of people using 3 too. Your ping won't be lower but at least it won't be higher either. It sounds a little expensive but so does that sat link. Still ANOTHER lol option would be to go with the sat, And hope that you can do a reg 56k connection still for your online gaming. Hope that helps some.

It has been awhile since I read this, but from what I saw it was at least 250-300 ms. 1000 ms is more likely. Satelites are good for bandwidth, but not for ping.Spanky's other suggestions would work better for games, methinks. IP: Logged |

That's interesting, I only heard it on the radio two days ago here myself. They said it was 1mb per sec download, unlimited time etc etc but Aus $75 a month, urk. What's the price your way Bryan? That would be about $30-35 US a month? Damn and I was thinking pings would be better. Oh well.------------------ IP: Logged |

Spyder,For the 400k service its 55/mo up to 1G per month with BigPond advance, plus about $400 equipment and installation. I think its 400k both ways. Cables heaps better (of course) but I don't think my wife thinks a good net connection is worth selling up and moving back to Sydney proper Standard satellite normally has 300ms round trip delay just for the link, so it is probably higher, but 1sec ping sounds like a lot. I think I might be able to talk my Brother in law into getting one so I might wait and see when he gets it installed. He doesn't play games much, mainly downloads but I should be able to check the ping out. If you are still there Mighty, can you say what the threshold for a ping to play SDOE would be? Thanks

Righto, the one I heard on the radio wasn't bigpond's one but someone else, definately said a 1mb per second download speed. Of course they never said anything about the installation costs so no doubt the dish and install will really blow it out. It was bad enough just getting a foxtel dish up. That has a modem socket too but they have no plans to make it functional as yet. I find 800+ pings become warpy in Sdoe, if I added 300ms to my ping in Cal12 I would be about 900+ ping by then. Haven't looked into cable this way but we're not part of the big smoke either and everything doubles outside of the CBD.

Foxtel uses telstra infrastructure so I would be surprised if the dish couldn't be used. BigPond uses the foxtel cable for BigPond advance cable. If not there goes my install cost justification theory ...Hm... 1Mb per second is around 8-10MBit/s sounds rather high. Theroetical speed is a bit misleading. For our 2M net connection at work, I rarely get above 20-30 KBytes/s download (which is only around 200-300kbit/s throughput) for sites outside of Australia, and, 99% of sites you are probably going to download alot from are going to be out of country. In Australia it hits around 80-90's, which is still less than 1MBit/s. IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. Just wondering what are you guys talking about when you say 400k or 1mb? Remember a modem is 56kilo bits. So when you say 400k it's kilobits i would think. My DSL is advertised at 1 meg, BUT thats 1 MegaBIT. It actually runs at 970kilobits, the modem is supposed to go up to 1.28megabits. In real speed terms its ends up being 100kiloBYTE downloads. Its about a meg every 10 seconds. Which is still smoking. So I wouldn't be supprised if that sat link that spy heard about was in bits and not bytes. The modem/internet people love to confuse the public like that. anyway. That sounds crazy expensive. my dsl is $40 a month including all fees and the modem rental 24/7 no download limit. 1 gig a month eh, hmm. 100megs x 10 is 1 gig right? is my math right there? Thats crazy, I don't have a page to check for my downloads but i do know that i would hit 1 gig in about 5 days. easy. IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. HAHHA right when i'm typing it up asking about the whole bits/bytes issue he brings it up LOL yeah seems like you arn't hitting your peak at work either. 2megbits shouuld be way faster then 80-90k i would think. BTW i'm wondering. Can you give me an addy to download somthing from down there? doesn't matter what it is. just so i can test the connection i get from there. Oh yeah. Spy seems pretty stable even when he was up at 700. I think anything 750 or lower is playable. Like I was saying man IF you really need crazy amounts of speed get the sat and see if theres an option to hook up at 56k for gaming. Or if its cheaper get 2 phonelines and get the 2 56ks set up that should be around 10k down 6k up. still slow but it does double your speed.

Ok 1mbit sounds more like it but the advert slanted towards byte rather than bit! Cheeky blighters, I guess they could wrangle out of that one by saying it was a pronounciation thing. On the foxtel port, it mentions in the manual that currently it isn't being used but I think they're probably looking for a way to charge access later or something. A meg every 10 seconds, gees! That would make those slow pages more fun, right now I think modems are too frustrating at times to enjoy the net properly. Spanks, try my ISP for a download. http://www.southwest.com.au/download.html

Strange, maybe it's a members thing only then. I don't know, just do a few searches for files in OZ I guess.

Sorry, I was out of pocket yesterday. It looks like you got lots of advice on playable pings. We have a 1000ms built-in delay and any packets arriving after that are considered lost. So 900ms would probably be right on the edge. 750 is probably a realistic maximum. The 1000 ping I was referring to was quoted a few years ago, so they may have improved it since then. IP: Logged |
