Looks like PC gaming is dying. I'm quite happy about that actually, as I think the pc gamer is the most screwed-in-the-ass consumer there is. i just read a post from pete Hawk saying that he usually considers a major system upgrade when processor speed doubles. Shit, if thats the case this beast that i bought in january will need replacing by the end of the year. I'm all for technology but why do we let ourselves get fucked so badly by hardware manufacturers? Its great that processors get so powerful so fast, but this should have a reflection in the price of the stuff-half what they ask at least. I won't upgrade again for games alone, its not worth it. Also, do you think we ever saw the Voodoo1+2 and all the other 'dead' graphics cards - life of a fucking butterfly!- perform to there full potential. No we didn't because the developers were already thinking about the soon to be released Voodoo bloody 10! At least consoles provide a stable investment and you know that you'll play the latest games on it for 3-4yrs (providing its successful-the leaders will soon come forward anyway) Providing Pc games innovativeness tranfers successfully to the consoles (no reason why it shouldn't) i for one am glad to see the Pc die.......

You're right... But... I'm sure you will consider again buying one of those PC's. Because right now it's where the good games are.

I was enjoying life with Linux... had completely got rid of the M$ shit... Until SDOE came out.

SDOE made me re-install Windows. I felt humiliated. But most games run under windows only. Period. You gotta live with it, and I don't see it changing in the near future. Yeah there are a few games under Linux. But Q3 is not enough for me.

PC and console markets have a lot of overlap, but they're not the same market. There are entire genres of games that won't cross over or will do so poorly. Depending on the types of games you play, you may need to keep a PC going. And if you're into cutting edge games you'll need to upgrade that PC occasionally or even regularly.

Spanky here...

Well actually if you want cutting edge its the PS2 so thats kinda wrong.

you just can't buy the hardware that that thing has under the hood right now.

Even if you ARE rich..

So PC will have it back though and then the Xbox might steal it back.

And then the dolphin too.

Then back to PC.

He does have a great point though. The console games costantly evolve, looking better and better as years go by.

The only way that happens with pc is if you upgrade cause you HAVE TOO.

Your right though. We may never see really good sims on consoles. GT and GT2 did some to dispell the myth that a console can't do sims though.

And PS2 and X box will push that back even more.

PS2 will suppport PC joysticks, keyboards, mice and such. So the line is once again blured.

Well, my overclocked Celeron 300A can now be safely upgraded to a Coppermine 550E running at over 900Mhz, I'd say an upgrade is in order. Heck it's so cheap to do, why not? Do I need it? Not really, it's mainly just to be more on the cutting edge. 450Mhz on my current setup is plenty fast, and faster than most average users out there, but I've always liked to be "on the edge" of the technology. BUT, not so much so that I'll blow a bazillion dollars to do it. I wait until others have gone before me and proven that this chip or that chip overclock well and reliably.

So that being said... you really think the PC is dead? HA I really think NOT! We are to a point in the history of the PC where it's getting just plain exciting to be alive! I can't wait until our PCs will take full advantage of 3D cards like the GeForce and GeForce 2. It's not far off. At one point I DID almost go to strictly consoles and gave up computers, but something told me to hang in there, and now I'm so glad I did.

The technology DOES change rapidly, but if you time it right you can find GREAT deals on stuff for real cheap! (935 Mhz for a little over $200... cost of my upgrade on my ABIT BH-6, YOU CAN'T BEAT IT!) And if you love games/sims as most as much of us here do, then buying a new console system to get a kick-ass newly released game is NEVER out of the question. If you really want it, save up and go buy it!! Otherwise, maybe you're just not as hardcore as you thought.

With me, it's play games or BUST!

Spanky here..

Why ever time I point out how consoles are pretty damn good does someone take that as me saying the PC is dead?

It not, and I never said it was or will be.

I still firmly belive that if you want the cutting edge theres nothing that can touch a PS2 right now.

Fact is Pete, if the pc developers make the shift will the innovative games not also? Pc games CAN be developed for consoles, just look at 'Hidden+Dangerous1+2','Halo','teamfortress2'.Its significant that Peter Molenyeux who has been a pc zealot from day one has stated that 'Black and White' will be his last pc game. 'Black and White' looks shit hot, its a traditioally pc game, but it will come out on Dreamcast + PS2. Most pc game developers admit that its just not economically viable to program for pc only anymore (except perhaps sim developers but their starting to die, aren't they?)Pc game sales have dropped dramatically in the last few years. Why put two years into developing something that wil sell 50,000 if the same effort could sell 2,000,000? These Pc developers will eventually complete the shift to consoles too. Who could blame them? Business is business. if nobody makes games for the machine anymore then its dead as a games machine-simple fact.

Hrump! ..

I just don't understand the hostility twards our "hobby" ...

Scuba, Snow skiing, hunting, driving, gambling enthusiast spend thousands yearly for their hobby and no one bats an eyelash ...

Yet on average a computer hobbiest spends maybe 600 to 1000 dollars yearly to continue their hobby and it's all the shit!

... It's all a matter of perspective. I enjoy my computer hobbie and honestly have no quams upgrading when necessary (and finacialy feasably)..

I don't want to sacrifice my enjoyment of my hobby so upgrading is necessary at some point.

I guess it falls under the ol' "if you can't run with the horses ... take the saddle off".

Hey Zurwaski, I'm not knocking your hobby! I've got one too! I just really think pc gaming has seen its day. The Peter Molenyeux thing really struck me, thats all. Hes been pc for so long its really interesting to see him publicly state that hes leaving. even microsoft are covering their backs.

Please don't think i'm one of those 'zealots' who love their computer, console so much they'll fight for it. I love pc games, I just won't be able to afford the upgrade! If the technology was cheaper I wouldn't have a problem. I for one don't see why it can't be, thats all. And i don't think we see half of what the technology can do before it becomes yesterdays news....

ROFLMAO!!!! Theres one thing all you have forgotten!.... YOU CANT HACK CONSOLE GAMES AND MAKE THEM KEWLER. Hahahahahahahahahaha!
Just think... If SDOE were on a console (or any other game out there) and if you were not too satisfied with it... TOO BAD, you will have to live with its limited self! Now with PCs, you can fudge anything till your hearts delight! Example... SDOE, look at all the user made stuff for it. So ha! One more thing.... you CANT download stuff onto consoles. (MP3s, videos, demos of games, fixes...) If they had harddrives that could do this, why not just use a PC? Gosh you people are so silly.

Spanky here..

Well first off your wrong argon.

Secondly alot of people don't care about that, they want a console cause its easy to play.

If you want to hack your games or what ever then yes Buy a PC.

But don't think it doesn't happen on consoles, its just on a much smaller scale.

Every hear of the Net yerozey? (i spelt that wrong btw) It was a special version of the playstation that you could use your computer to code and download it onto the playstation to play it.

Now there people out there hacking there normal playstations. theres special cards you can buy that drop into your PC and do the same thing.

Theres tons of hacking going on, you just wouldn't see it unless you where involved.

I have a ISO I have to burn here. Its a nintendo emulator for the playstation that you burn onto a cd, It comes with the emulator and 70 games. Is that hacking enough for ya?

The whole industry is designed to perpetuate itself, bigger cpu sucking software = faster and speccy hardware = bigger cpu sucking software.....
Try installing windows 3.11 on your machine these days, it's so fast it's not funny.
I miss the days of assembly coded games that really used the most of the system hardware rather then what might be able to run it smoothly later, but times they are a changing.
A windows dual boot allowing a 'stripped of excess bloatware' just for gaming would be nice.
