The movie is entirely fictional, so I'm not sure if any historical resource on the real U571 would discuss it (assuming there even was a U571), but if you're looking for the movie's site, it's www.U571.com , and it's SWEET. The "real" U-571 was a Type VIIC, that was destroyed in 1944. For further information, visit U-boat.net's page on it: http://www.uboat.net/boats/u571.htm Toodles, Dora-Niner IP: Logged |

I saw U-571 last Friday.I loved every second of it. Throughout the movie, I don't know who’s knuckles were whiter; mine clutching the theatre seat, or the actors who grabbed whatever they could while being depth-charged. This movie was pure non-stop action, from beginning to end. You are there, really there, experiencing the gripping fear of submarine warfare. I believe that was the intention of the movie and if so, accomplished that superbly. I think the acting, camera work, and sound was excellent. Now, regarding other issues. The movie is NOT historical; it is fictional. It is based (loosely) on history (history being that there once were German and Allied submarines that fought in a war known as World War II, and that there was a German code machine the Allies called the "enigma"). Not only is it not historical regarding the event (the capturing of U-571 and the enigma code machine by Americans) but in many other areas such as what submarines of that era and their weapons could and could not do (such as dogfighting underwater with torpedo’s). Don't look for character development either. There isn't much. It's more like the first 1/2 hour of "Saving Private Ryan" (the landing on the beach episode ) throughout the length of the movie. Thankfully, in my opinion of what a "war" movie should be, it was not muddled up with "love" scenes or anything stupid and mushy like most are. And also, thankfully, there wasn't "angel music" playing all the time. The second "trailer" was misleading in that it showed a ball-room dance, leading the viewer to believe there was some "love" interests, and played angel music, of which there was neither in the movie. It was just man-to-man combat and basic survival. I hope everyone who sees it will enjoy it for what it is and not concentrate on, or blame it for what it isn't. Enough analyzing -- Go see it! I suggest choosing a modern theatre with a big-screen and digital sound system. Salut! JG2"FireCat! [This message has been edited by JG2_FireCat! (edited 04-23-2000).] IP: Logged |

Saw it...thought it was crap. Suspense was practically nil, and bad guys died 100 times easier than the good guys. Good acting in spots, especially the sonar operator.IP: Logged |

Actaully, the time of the beginning of Saving Private Ryan was 22 minutes, the actual estimated time it took to breach that beach head. I haven't seen U571 yet, I am too cheap to plunk down $6 to see it. I'll pay $3 when it makes it on post.IP: Logged |

Spanky here... Me too Whirl. And the theaters in this town suck ass. We didn't even have a stereo theater until the phantom menace. And I think it might have only been temperary while it was here. Cheap bastards. I get a better sound at home. No i just need a projector

Saw it last night. I thought it was not horrible, but generally silly. It falls between The Hunt for Red October (Top Gun in the water) and Das Boot (top notch verisimilitude and a poingant story.) On Mighty's Brother's Total Movie Value Scale, I rate it Pay Per View. That's about three stars out of five.A friend of mine summed it up pretty well: In the sprit of baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and whatever else was in that song before Chevy wrecked it, we're going to go watch some Americans kick the schnitzel out of a bunch of German submawieners!! It's American movie making at it's best. U-571, based on the true story of the W.W.II-era British heroics that allowed the Allied forces to break top-secret Nazi codes- dramatically changing the course of the war- this version just adds some submarines, smartly leaves the Brits out all together and gives credit where credit is due- To the Americans!! If you liked Top Gun Underwater I: The Hunt for Red October, You'll Love Top Gun Underwater II: U-571! IP: Logged |

Supposedly, there is a digitally remastered version of Das Boot out on DVD somewhere. I might pick it up, of the price is right. U571 might be something I see by accident. My wife would not be interested in it.IP: Logged |

OK...my .02I think you would be making a big mistake in waiting to rent this sucker or use Pay-Per-View...UNLESS- you have a really good surround-sound setup. I thoroughly enjoyed it- but if I had waited to see it until it was out on video/DVD- I would've lost all the immersiveness. Any good sub movie makes you feel claustrophbic at best- and I did. But the thuds of the depth charges and torpedoes and the sound of how many atmospheres of ocean buckling the chambers in the sub have to be heard in Dolby at best. It was quite a movie IMHO...and well worth the $8. ------------------ Brought to you by the campaign for a better Dauntless!

Ok, I gotta rant. I'm NEVER reading a movie review again. I read Ebert's take on it the day it came out, and went and saw it with a bunch of my friends for my birthday, and Ebert killed it for me. No, killed is too light a word, he murdered it. Stuff like the depth charge interval suddenly approaching zero as they approach the U571, the fact that the U571 is apparantly indestructible, and that weak(imo) American Captain (weak in terms of characterisation) I would have noticed a little anyhow, but reading that review underscored, highlighted and drew arrows towards it all. My friends loved the movie, I groaned. I saw the trailer for it a few weeks earlier and thought I had died and gone to heaven. I had been looking forward to it so much but I couldn't help but go "oh yeah, that really pathetic part must be coming up soon" throughout the action scenes. The action itself was nice, and I really like the XO and the Chief of the Boat, and the German Electrician who was taken prisoner, and I loved the scenes with the Messerchmitt overflying the sub (not the yelling on the conning tower, but just seeing a plane much like the ones we fly and going "hey! I know that view!", and seeing the Kriegsmarine in action as opposed to always the allies but the torp duelling, the fruitless depthcharging and that fluffy captain were really weak, imo. Btw, wasn't that catalina awesome!! (Ooooh Pete!!) Werner ------------------ It's coming... The NEW bcatp! Stay tuned for details! IP: Logged |

I agree with Mighty here. The young guy's going to come out of that movie thinking this is the way it happened. Sounds like a fun movie for action but couldn't they have gone for a plot that was really historical or didn't try to steal the glory? Gawd! Das boot really wins in that dept. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. I will put my vote in for Das Boot too. That movie was great. Except for the plane strafeing part. I didn't like that at all.

Another movie to consider is Crimson Tide. It occurred to me after writing the above that Crimson Tide dealt with one of the same "moral dilemmas" that U-571 tried to: Is the XO officer enough to make the tough calls? While the torpedo scenes in Crimson Tide were another Top Gun under water, albeit better than U-571, I thought they did an outstanding job of making you understand where both main characters were coming from.IP: Logged |
