Now this is REALLY off-topic!OK so after 16 years tor so without leaving old Europe I'm going to visit friends that are temporarily working in Calgary this summer. I've got the usual travel guides and stuff but I felt you guys could give me more pointers or ideas on what to see there, since there seems to be a lot of people from Canada on this forum. My plan is to go to Vancouver - I know that's quite far away but I really want to see the Pacific ocean. Thanks for your ideas.

Spanky here... Well I have only barly been in BC but I lived in northern Alberta when I was young. I like it. And think that moving back out west someday wouldn't be a bad idea. I hope you have a great time. I'm sure people that are more familier with the area will have lots of tips and places to see.

Hey, I'm in Vancouver. You won't see much of the Pacific from here unless you hop on a ferry and go to Vancouver Island. The island shelters Vancouver from the Pacific proper, but I guess the Georgia Strait counts unless you're a purist. I would highly recommend Banff, which is close to Calgary and on the way to Vancouver. Whister is a good day trip from Vancouver. It's primarily a ski resort but has become something of a year-round sort of place, if you don't have an aversion to pricey international resorts. I could go on... Anyhow, by Canadian standards Vancouver is not very far from Calgary. You can drive it comfortably in two days and lots of people do it one day.IP: Logged |

Well, in the first week or so of July the Calgary Stampede is on (it's a HUGE event known world-wide). From there you have Banff National (International) Wildlife park and Reserve in the Canadian Rockies(~1 hour away), Drumheller (~1 hour away) contains the worlds largest Dinosaur museum and is next to the 'badlands' where you can golf or dig for the next unknown dino, then there Lake Louise which is another resort type hotel in the Rockies. If you want web sites for tour information in Calgary, let me know.Spoon. IP: Logged |

Heay, I live in Calgary We should hook up man! The stampede goes from the 3rd to the 14th. It's great fun. LOTS of FREE concerts and events. Everything from the REAL Canadian super dogs to Shania Twain!.......... is that a groan I hear? It's ok, I'm not a big country fan myself. But NOTHING beats those dogs! When your here you should be sure to check out the saddledome (Where the Calgary Flames play), The Calgary Tower, Eau Clair market, Heratige park, Fort Calgary, and some other places I'm forgetting. And when your in Canada, don't forget to try Poutein! It's the greatest! KFC sells good Poutein. Look me up when you get here! I think you'll like Canada. ------------------ Cheers! Funny story: In quebec at least, Vladimir Putin is translated Vladimir Poutine. Pachy - I'll probably be away from Calgary over Stampede (I try to avoid that time period because of all the people and traffic sucks) but make sure you visit some of the local clubs, and that you visit the Museum of the Regiments, and if you have time the Naval Museum and the Aerospace Museum. The Aerospace Museum has a bunch of cool planes on display, including a Lancaster. If you only have time for one, go to the MotR, I'm a bit biased because I volunteer there, but it has the best displays and is the biggest. If you're into cycling, the city also has an impressive concrete path system that, at that time of the year, would provide you with a beautiful view of the city, as it goes through the river valleys and includes some spectacular viewpoints. I hope you have fun on your trip! Werner ------------------ DOWNLOADS+PILOT ROSTER+FAN SITE INNOVATION=B.C.A.T.P. Visit Today! IP: Logged | |
