I just got my new barebones Athlon shipped to me yesterday. I had orderd the FIC board, but it came with a Microstar board instead. I had heard the FIC board supported overclocking, but I never researched the Microstar board. Granted, I may never overclock the chip. To its credit, the Microstar board does come with a good Creative sound chip on on board. So, if you are knowledgable regarding Athlon boards, should I be calling the shipper to send the main board back for my FIC, or should I be thankful they goofed up and sent me the Microstar with sound. Well if you want to OC than I would send it back. I have an Athlon 600 with the Asus board. I think the Asus and the FIC are the only two boards that allow OCing. What about that GoldFinger thing or whater it is called? I hear that works real good for OC an Athlon chip on a non-oc motherboard - even better than having an oc-able motherboard. -Sv IP: Logged |

I saw the write up on the goldfinger, and it seemed like the way to go if you really want to overclock. I haven't seen what it cost though. The true test will be what framerate I get. On my old sytem I could only hold about 15fps. If I can get a good frame rate on the new system I won't overclock until there is a program that needs the speed. I have to watch burning a chip up since my wife is in charge of the budget and it took a year to get this upgrade approved. IP: Logged |

Well, to answer my own question, I finally got to do some web serching on the two boards, and I'm actually very pleased. It seems that the FIC board falls behind the MIS board on preformance and overclocking, and in extra ports (usb etc). Add to that the on board sound and I'm very happy indeed. IP: Logged |

MIS was one of the first companies to jumper the slocket to dual process with it. I haven't heard enough of anything else to know any better. What model of board is it? I have a friend who is pondering an Athlon.IP: Logged |

Its a K7Pro board. I'll try to get the actual series number posted after I assemble the machine.Unfortunately, as much as I want to assemble my baby, my wife tells me I have to finish the garage conversion before I can play with my new computer. IP: Logged |

Just like a wife. They let you buy a new toy after months of pleading and kissing up and then won't let you play with it. Do they go to school to learn these things or is it genetic? IP: Logged |

On-board sound-chip, like an on-board graphics-chip, indicates a cheap board. Send it back and demand what you paid for.IP: Logged |
