Well not in SDOE yet but looks like we are going to see some progress shots shortly from Maddox:

IL-2 Sturmovik : Update 3 !
Courtesy Maddox Games

Editor's Note : Kudos (Many Thanks) to Oleg and the gents @ Maddox Games for their patience in dealing with us - thru constant communication, we're able to provide the following interview. Also included are some of the most recent screenshots taken under DX7.0 and note the various damage states of IL-2!

Maddox Games Speaks!

I just got word in from Oleg the other day and here are just some of the details that will be featured in the upcoming IL-2 Sturmovik : Tank Killer from our favorite Developer in Mother Russia!

Current Progress of IL-2 Development:

Russia's largest software house "1C Company" and Maddox Games created a joint venture known as 1C:Maddox Games with the objective to get IL-2 Sturmovik and other projects up to top optimization before publishing it. 1C Company owns 51% of this joint venture.

IL-2 Sturmovik (Beta 01) will be ready before E3 2000. There are many of the new features and changes.

Here's a final list of aircraft that we plan for the release of IL-2 Sturmovik:

FLYABLE Aircraft :

IL-2 Single seat. 1940 year production with 2x20mm machine cannons.
IL-2 Single seat. 1941 year production with 2x23mm machine cannons.
IL-2M Type-2. 1942 year production. Rear Gunner Included.
IL-2 Type 3. 1943 year production with new 15-degree swept-back wing portions and new 1720 hp AM-38F engine.
IL-2 Type 3M. 1943 year production with 2x37mm Anti-Tank Cannons.
IL-2T. Torpedo bomber. 1943 year production for Soviet Naval Aviation.
IL-2I. Armored Anti-Bomber Fighter. Based on the single seat variant.
LaGG-3. 1941 initial series production with M-105 engine.
LaGG-3. 1944. The last and best series with M-105PF2 engine.
MiG-3. 1940-41 year production. High altitude fighter.
MiG-3U. (1942-45 power buy new engine and new cannon)
P-39N (US lend-lease)
P-39Q (US lend-lease)
Bf-109E-4 (1941)
Bf-109G-2 (1942-45)
Bf-109G-6 (1943-45)

NON-Flyable Aircraft :

R-10, U-2(Po-2), Li-2, I-16, La-5FN, La-7, Yak-1, Yak -7, Yak –9, Yak –3, Bf-109E-7/B, Bf-109K-4, FW-190A-4, FW-190A-8, He-111H-6, Hs-129, Ju-87B-2, Ju-87D-3, Ju-87G-1, Ju-52, Ju-88, Fi-156 Storch.

In summary, 38 planes will be modeled with better quality polys than what you may already have seen in the old screen shots...

We are also preparing add-ons after the release of retail box product ; new flyable planes for multiplayer and solo play. The player will be able to use such add-ons with IL-2 Sturmovik at first for multiplayer mode but this would also mean that player will be able to use the Mission builder that to build new missions with the planes from the add-ons packs. Tentatively, the first add-ons will feature the FW-190 and IL-10. Depending on the response of simmers, we'll see how far that goes...

In additional to all Air-To-Ground (A2G) missions, there will be missions where player can try to intercept groups of IL-2 and escorting Russian fighters in Bf-109's. So, you will be able to play from the other side of the war as well. The player will be able to fly IL-2's, Russian fighters or select the other side - German fighters (look above the list of flyable planes).

Multiplayer Options : Co-Op with up to 16 players at once across the internet based on single / campaign missions designs. It's possible to create your own coop scenario missions in mission builder and play than across the internet with others. Dogfighting (or "All out War") allows at least 32 players in the air at once.

Also, we've featured a rear gunner position for your single or multiplayer experience (IL-2 only).

Customizable Skins available. Player's paint scheme, nation markings, numbers, squadron markings for each single and flyable plane in the multiplayer modes are exportable.

They'll catch flack for the non-flyable 190's... other than that, it looks like a might just must have.

I'd rather have a flyable Yak than a flyable 190 in a Russian sim, sounds like they'll have neither. As long as it "doesn't suck" I'll be very happy to get a quality eastern front sim finally.

Hi guys!!!

I see here some questions about IL-2...
Ok. I would like to say about fly-non-flyable planes in our sim. We do all modeles with the cockpits, FM's and damage models coresponding to real prototypes (based on a lot of docs, trials, etc). It isn't easy. Simmer would like to get real copy of original plane.... What is better: many planes which modeled bad or some amount, which modeled very good and use different DM, FM and detailed cockpits?
Also, some of 3D models, which present currently in list as non-flyable we plant to release with add-ons as flyable, but after release of retail box (with declared features). So, later simmers will be able to use 190's and some others in virtual battles for custom missions (Mission builder) and for all modes of multiplay.

Good hunting.
Oleg "Mad" Maddox

Thanks Pete Hawk

Another sim that definitely bears watching IMHO. At least the well is not drying up completely, this summer should be interesting.

Hi Oleg, good to see you here

You asked which is better: Lots of not-so-well modelled planes or a few very well modelled.

I'd take the few well modelled planes. You can always add planes later

Oleg, I think you've come to the right place. These guys are the experts of user made modifications. An open architecture, like OpenPlane in SDOE, will prolong a sims life and ensure a much larger customer base.

Keep up the good work!

Peachy, add on plane are cool. It is just that some reveiwers have a certain list of 'requirements' for a flight sim that they keep laying around and use it as a 'damage mod' for their rating system. I just remember a certain sim being harped on for not having a flyable 190, and another flight sime for not having a 109. I just want to see a worthy flight sim get a worthy review.

Of course, they might do some harpin' over the non-flyable Migs, but after all the game is based on the IL2, so I hope they don't wine.
