AGAS 5 here...

Thought I'd let you know of a little project that a few friends and I are into...

During 1943 (or there abouts) an Aust P40 crashed during bad weather enroute from Canberra to Sydney.

We're trying to find the crash site, identify the aircraft (by part serial number)
and follow up on what records exist on it.

We've tracked the area down... have even found a person who knows of the exact area...
as it turns out we were within 20m of the site on one of our searches !!

Eventually I would like to see two things happen...the first being a memoral to the pilot at the site...the second (when someone builds a P40 !!) do a skin of the aircraft and fly with it(can't wait for the Pacific Theatre !!).

We have another expedition scheduled for sometime in Feb... I'll keep you updated on our progress...maybe even pics !!

Cheers,

AGAS 5

AGAS,

That sounds pretty exciting. Good luck to you and your mates in the recovery of the aircraft.

understand your difficulties - there's an engine from a Marine Corps FM-1 that crashed in the sta. ynez river in 1942 not 300m from where I sit right now; but since the riverbed's part of the national forest behind me, getting the forest service to extract it for preservation is very very hard.

Roadtoad,

If they are anything like the Forestry people here in Aust, they would be very hesitant to do any work near rivers and such. The Greenies give them heaps everytime they dirty up a creek or river (rightly or wrongly).

Luckily for us the person we found who knows the site is the forman for that particular forest. A good man who is interested in a memorial there too.

Cheers,
