I have an e-mail with an attatched file that I am beginning to suspect may be a booby-trap. Can anybody tell me if it's possible to scan it for a virus without opening it?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Most anti-virus software these days will scan any file you download or create.
Just make sure your virus definitions are up to date.
If ya send me the file I can scan it for ya.

That's very kind of you Reaper. My defs are up to date, but it's my understanding that the attatched file would have to be opened before it could be scanned..by which time it would already be doing it's damage? I need to scan it whilst still un-opened. Am I correct in this?

Hi Jerry. I'd rather not mention any specifics until I have this bugger nailed down. Watch this space.

You should find most good virus scanners will examine a zipped file ( if that's what it is), either way, just opening a zip won't do anything. Even if you open the zip you have to run the exe/com/macro file before the virus will work.
Was the senders address anon or do you know the sender?
Just open it and stand back.....

Ok, I'm gonna open the bugger. If you guys over there notice a large flash of light from due east, you'll know what it is...

I've been picking bits of the monitor out of my face for the last hour. Now I have to extract the tower from the ceiling.
All is well, one of those rare instances when my paranoia was unfounded. Phew!

You should be able to right click for menu and scan any attached file.
Glad there was no problems.
