Just as I decide to start thinking about buying an AMD motherboard and processor, Intel shifts a 1/2 foot forward to confuse my analysis. http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/3/23309.html IP: Logged |

I'm as confused as you are. I was going to go the AMD way too but with recent prices reduction on P4s, the delayed release of the nForce chipset and the early release of those DDR P4 boards I don't know what to do.This is how I understand the situation:
- The fastest combination is AMD CPU on a VIA chipset MB. Too bad, they're extremely unstable and incompatibilities problems are very numerous.
- nForce-based mobos for the AMD processors look promising, but despite being officially released they are not available yet and most probably will not be until 2002.
- Even though the P4 is less powerful as the Athlon, its prices are now affordable and the DDR with it looks interesting. As the article says, these i845D mobos were not officially released, but they are available!

I would like to read a whitepaper which describes which games and hardware configurations have problems with the Athlon.I'm still thinking that, on a short-term basis (18 months), a low end Athlon XP might be a better choice for Fighter Squadron than an equivelently priced P4. VIA has had problems for years (since the intro of AGP anyway), but some people state they are able to get good performance out of their system. It seems to be a matter of spending time to get all the drivers properly loaded. I don't know. IP: Logged |

No fellas. Go with AMD 761 chipset and DDR. Very stable and fast. IP: Logged |

Well with everyone buying Athlons these days, I figured buying Intel would be a true rebel attitude Here's the new box: ASUS P4B266 1,8 GHz Pentium 4 512 Mb DDR GeForce3 Ti 500 40 Gb IBM 7200T Seems to work so far *crosses fingers* IP: Logged |

Pachy, did you have to do anything to get SDOE to run on your Ti500? I have an Asus Ti200 and I can't get it past the load screen (full thread in help).------------------ Werner Molders Abbeville Field: Dedicated to the SDOE Experience. IP: Logged |

What about AGP 4x voltage problems?Does my Voodoo 5500 need the higher voltage spec, which isn't available on the new Intel AGP 4x motherboards? I'm going to stay with the Voodoo if I can, I really like the Glide graphics... for another year if possibele. IP: Logged |

After reading this today: http://www.tecchannel.de/hardware/817/index.html and seeing this: http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/hardware/reviews/mp1900/ I'm going to try to buy an Athlon if I survive my trip on American Airlines to LAX. My personal opinion, stay with AMD About the best board for the money IMO right now would be:Abit KR7A-RAID (gotta love that SoftMenu III BIOS) Upto Palamino XP1900 ATA133 And if you're into overclocking, this board is GOD, fully configurable via the SoftMenu for FSB, multiplyer, but more importantly, you can alter the RAM, PCI and AGP frequancy, this is where most overclocking fails, with this, you can overclock the CPU to it's max if you want, while keeping the parts listed above to norma or only minimal o/c, so, you get a very fast, but very stable machine when o/c'd IP: Logged |
