READ THE README FILES! When you're adding stuff to this game it is imperative that you read them. (Imperative means it's really important.) They'll tell you how to unzip everything and where to put the files if the unzip doesn't work properly. If you don't have it already, you'll need Winzip. Get it at www.tucows.com, you can read the readme.txt file before unzipping by double clicking on the zip file and then scrolling down until you see it. Double click on it and it'll open in Wordpad or Notepad. READ SAME!
Do exactly what it says and you should have no problems.

I don't mean to be rude 7lhemicuda, but you are not going to receive much help from people here unless you show that you have at least *tried* to help yourself first.Have you looked in the main FS:SDOE directories for startup.ppf?

If you still can't find it, use the Windows "Find Files or Folder" applet, from your Windows 'Start' button.Ask Windows to find startup.ppf and it will find it for you.

I know it would have been easier for me just to tell you under which directory startup.ppf resides, but I'm trying to urge you to find it by your own efforts.People on this forum are always very happy to help newbies, but they don't appreciate it much if the person asking for help hasn't really tried to help themselves first.

Your right of course and I guess I should of told you that I looked in the files folders find and couldn't find it under ppf, startup.ppf, fighter squadron startup.ppf, and I looked in the my computer and all the other categories and still couldn't find it. As for the directorie I couldn't find it anywhere that had to do with fighter squadron all I found for ppf's was the Ju52/3m and I typed in aircraft/weapons/paratrooper.sm

Guys, you may owe 71hemicuda an apology. I have been doing this for a long time and I just looked in my \Fighter Squadron\Media folder and NO startup.ppf, BUT the game still ran (No kidding) The paratroopers didn't work anymore of course.

I moved the startup.ppf from another install of SDOE and now they work. I don't know if this has anything to do with the patch or what, but this has never happened before.

Hemi, open NotePad, copy the following and paste into Notepad, then save as startup.ppf in your \Fighter Squadron\Media directory. Leave out the "[This message has been edited by Raider (edited 04-08-2001).]" at the bottom.

OK, I'll help you to get the Corsair working at least

Find your startup.ppf file. It's in the media folder, under the Fighter Squadron folder. It should be a long file, like what Vahnatai posted above. If you can't find it, make one, and copy the text from Vahnatai's post into it, quotes, parentheses, and all. In particular, if the lines for F4U-1D.sm and F4U-1D.ppf don't appear, the Corsair isn't going to work.

Now for the plane itself. If you haven't downloaded the Planepack 6.1, you haven't got the most current planes (including the Corsair). At the website in my post above, you can get the "standard" Corsairs, and the newer "beta" version as separate downloads, but I'd still recommend getting the planepack.

The planepack is self-installing, but if you download a Corsair from my site, you will unzip it into your Fighter Squadron folder. Once that is done, you should see a folder for "f4u1" in your Media/aircraft folder. If not, you've unzipped to the wrong folder, but no worries. At worst, you've got some extra folders that didn't go where they were supposed to. You should have a "pilot" folder in the Media folder, and an "f4u1" folder in the Media/aircraft folder. If you don't have either the planepack or the f4u1 folder, the Corsairs won't work until you do.

All the Corsairs depend upon the files that are in the f4u1 folder, and the pilot figure comes from the Media/pilot folder. If you download the "beta" F4U-1A Corsair, it ALSO requires the OLD f4u1 folder for some files.

The startup.ppf file MUST contain the lines for the F4U-1D .sm and .ppf file or ANY Corsair will CTD.

That oughta get you started. If you have a startup.ppf file that looks like Vahnatai's above in your Media folder, and a folder called "f4u1" in your Media/aircraft folder, and it STILL won't work, then we'll talk further...

Hemi,

The Planepack (PP) should be easy to install. Just open the setup.exe and follow the prompts.

Once the PP is installed, it will include some new training missions for some of the naval planes that will teach you how to take off from carriers and land from them as well as defending them, etc. You don't need to thw Pacific terrain to use the carriers BTW, but this terrain looks really nice imo.

As for the Pacific terrain (aka PTO), go to Nats' site...
http://members.nbci.com/naturlich

and go to the PTO download section. It comes in 7 parts. Once you've downloaded all seven parts, run the "media.bat" file included in one of the parts (first part I think), and it will join the other parts together to form a single large zip file. Unzip this zip file and make sure you read the readme.

Follow the instructions and you should be fine.

For backup purposes of the PTO, you can just store the large zip file that was joined together by the bat file and you won't need the other 7 parts you downloaded.

And also don't forget to download all 7 parts of PTO (Pacific terrain) to the SAME folder so the bat file can join them properly.

Forget about the pacific for a second and help me with the planepack I downloaded it and it gave me 4 new windows that had icons like the mission editor has that says stuff like canopy reflection, etc so I hit the up button on the P-47 window and there was a folder that said P-47 so I hit up again and there was a bunch of files under accesories or thats what the files where but the bar on top said I was in fighter squadron and I couldn't find the setup.exe so I went to file find and got 4 or 5 files that where .exe and I clicked on the on that said plane pack setup.exe but it wont open I click and nothing happens so I right clicked and then open but it still didn't open so where do I go from here

Just busy

After installing the Planepack, you can close those new windows it brings up. If you're seeing those windows, you have installed the PP successfully. Just start SDOE and have fun!

You can access those files later by clicking "Start | "Programs" | "Fighter Squadron", etc. Those are just options anyway.

Be advised that carrier take offs and landings are difficult. Just like the Sea pidgeons are always going on about on television. So don't get discouraged if and when you crash immediately. It's a learning process. Remember, it's just a game so you can't die from it and you're not getting paid to play it.
Also, in my version of the game the P47 doesn't like to take off. It jumps around like a grasshopper as soon as I start the engine. Funny as hell the first time but then it gets annoying. It's caused by something doesn't break in the modeling of the aircraft. No, I don't know how to fix it. I learned to edit missions so I could start them at 10 feet altitude. Eliminates the problem.
Fly the skip bombing mission in the training menu for the 47. It's a target rich environment. Great fun. Helps a lot if you've set your self to invulnerable.

I believe the startup.ppf has been .par'd along with the rest of the stuff in the latest planepacks... (that's why it works if you don't "have" one in your directory.

ALso... I "believe" the latest patch builds do now query for a startup.ppf....

...Sunray,

Make sure you have "damage" turned on... The prop has a breaking DOF that fires an ignition sound and smoke... If you cannnot damage yourself this DOF will not break, thus causing your plane to hop around.

Also Sunray, if you're using any of the SDOE betas (Build 65, etc), I've heard that these don't support breaking DOFs so the P47 won't work with the betas. Try offical patch 1.5 if you're not already.

Thanks. I'll give that a try. I have the latest patch installed, I think. I'll give it a try anyway.
Remember, it's just a game. At least that's what I keep telling myself.
