OK... I figure if Private Roger can come up with the OpenPlane Contest and have it work, just maybe I can come up with something too.

I don't think I have to tell anybody what a great community we have going here.

Well...
High schools have class reunions all the time and they get discounts on hotel rooms and banquets, etc. for such gatherings. I think sometimes they even get discounts on airfare.

Anyhow, here's my crazy-ass idea that just might work:

I say we should organize a big SDOE get together, everybody bring your baby (that's your PC) your joystick, some spending money and a couple changes of clothes (AHEM!)

This is something that the community could organize and participate in together.
We could finally meet (and personally thank) our SDOE HEROES face to face... the real heroes like MH, Pete Hawk, Tail, Zur, Sv, and everybody else who's put in so much hard work without any monetary compensation.
Then we could rip them a new one in the sky

There'd be snacks, there'd be beer, it'd be great! We could take a poll or just take feedback on what time of year and locations would be best. I know we have people in the community from all around the world.

My high school (located in Rota, Spain) had an alumni get-together, which just happened to be downtown in the city I live in, but I didn't see any reason to go.

A gathering like this, however, I would make a sincere effort to attend.

I know it sounds like a big undertaking, but everything has to start somewhere. Like I said, just look at PR's Contest suggestion for example. This is starting out as just an idea, but hopefully will grow into something greater.

I need your feedback, everybody! I want to know your thoughts on this.

Spanky here...

I think its a great idea but unfortunatly i wouldn't be able to attend since i'm a lazy bum.

It could be pretty damn cool though. Too bad it takes money.

Maybe people could do one in the states and a couple of the canadians could get down there.

Another problem is the computer. Does anyone want to drag that sucker through the airport?

It would really rock though. It would be better if we had a bigger community. Maybe some people would even play some quake HAHAHAHAHA

I too would love this. As long as there is plenty of pizza, I'm there!

SDOE addict and pizza junkie, that's me

Reaper, I've been through Rota, Spain many a time. Wow, what a cool place.

Doesn't MH have to do those show things allot for new products he's working on? Maybe hooking up your event idea here with one of those shows to showcase OpenPlane or something... that might be cool.

no SV, usually other people do the shows and I'm at the office working on the product.

You guys may want to try to get info out of the QuakeCon type organizers to see what's involved in a con (since that's pretty much what you're talking about, just on a smaller scale).

I wonder if we could get GD involved, just as a way to tell the game devel community that people do like expandable games, and it is, game development on a community scale, esp since Pete is adding modern jets (no heat seekers yet ), another group is doing WWI, and (heh ) I'm trying to add a Viper to the game. OpenPlane isn't perfect, but hell, what is?

Oh, GDC is Game Developer, a magazine I subscribe to. Good reading, if only I could take time out to try some of the cool things they keep showing me how to do in it. BTW, they also are owned by the company that does the Game Developer's Conference (March something this year, in the Valley) and runs Gamasutra.com, a place to find information, unique articles, postmortems, forums, and jobs in and about the game racket.

Just let me know when and where and I'll be there. If it is not too far from me I'll drive and pick up some people if they want to car pool. Spyder, haven't all those people paid you yet for your software? Pete, I'm with you on the beer and pizza.
Cheers.
Himdog out.

I have thought about an SDOE convention for some time now.
I would for sure be there. "Cya honey, be back in three or four days". " Don't touch the the computer, the stereo, my guitars, or the remote"! hehe.
Organize it, They will come.

One slight problem, where would you hold it? the most practicle place would shorely be the US as this is where most users are (arn't they?) but as I live in the UK/Erope this may be a problem if you know what I mean: - (

Great idea though, and it can be made to work as I used to attend Warbird and DoA meetings years ago.

The meeting part is great, the costs are bad and the computer idea is slightly different but it could work.

Keep it simple though......

Well, we in the FC have talked about doing our own little get together... actually, we would be more of a club than a show. Like the rotary club or BPOE.. stuff like that. Hotels do give reduced rates for this kind of thing depending on the turnout. Personally I think that we should start small. Perhaps squads doing their own get togethers and seeing what happens. This will give us an idea of what would work for a big event. Also, if we want people to show up, then perhaps do it like the quake "Cons"... a combat contest. Perhaps make it a squad v squad contest with the squad that wins getting some prize.... and all over a lan so the dreaded hit bug can't flare up. Perhaps get another corporate sponser like 3dfx is doing with the plane contest to help with prizes and cost. We could invite the big magazines to send a rep to see what is going on and what the sim is turning into. I agree that the US is probably the choice spot to do it in since many of us are here. Somewhere central would most likely be best as it would be more even for the east/west coasters to get to.
Just some random thoughts from an over stressed psychopath.....

Hmmm...could Katana make it?

Could he bring Jade?

I think I would try to be there, if so!

A side note: I have read of similar types of conventions/LAN parties where a local computer outlet would rent all the equipment necessary...including NIC's, cables, etc., up to the computers and monitors themselves.

Might be a alternative to those who do not want to lug their units ---- ah, I mean computers!!---- around!

And it seems quite a few members of our little community seem to be Canadian or Australian - hmm - Australia might be a good place...

I am sure the festivities would go far into the night.
At that point we could video conference with our pals across the pond and down under.
May be wishfull but it would be cool.

I saw a post over at combatsim about CFS having a convention/party/lag-fest,turns out it's right here in my little hometown(Lexington,KY.)I wish it was this community instead if those guys coming here,we are set up pretty good for this sort of thing, lots of hotel space, good prices, great food everywhere and lots of beer!!

Maybe a couple of us could show up to the cfs convention, secretly install SDOE on their boxes and watch the fun!!
