This time it's Test Drive: Off Road 3
To make a long story short: This game blows!!! I played it on the station about a month ago, and didn't really like it that much, but for people who are into arcade style racing I guess it was OK....But I was just sent the same game for the PC, and I'm just shaking my head at how bad it is. First of all, I installed it about four times to see if the skins would fix themselves because when I went into the game, there was no video, the menus were all jumpy and the damn skins were all on backwards and upside-down!! I finally figured it out when I went onto the disk itself and found an exe that was to calibrate and set your video mode. I set it to 3DFX and boom, it all worked fine. This generally wouldn't be a problem except that they failed to mention that anywhere in the readme or the help stuff. I would think that that is a pretty integral part of running the damn game and would be put on the hard drive when you installed...but nope, too much to ask I guess.
As for the game itself well....where do I start....oh yeah, the vehicles. All of your typical off-road 4x4s are here (they don't seem to actually be 4x4 yet though) and infrogames has gotten the liscences to almost all the major SUVs and pickups on the road. So if you want to see your Dodge Ram do insane things off of crazy jumps, then by all means, just don't try that with the real thing. Unless you can afford to, in which case, I could really use a nasty, bad assed Ford GT-40 to cruise around and pick up chicks in. (Thanking you in advance-Jef Shoults) Anyways, the vehicles are modeled very poorly, models like that may fly on the station, but a boxy-as-hell vehicle on the PC these days crashes and burns in my books. When I say boxy, I MEAN boxy too. These things are like textured bricks, chisled to resemble thier rel-life counterparts by a 10 year old with a warm lead chisle. One jeep is a convertable, and I swear, the driver can't be made of more than about 25 polygons. He has an oblong "helmet" with no visor, and no arms to speak of. Did they change the rules about drivers needing actual arms and eyes to enter a race, or did I miss those new rules? Anyways, the tracks are well made and the soundtrack is alright too, but It is almost a direct port from the station version, and it REALLY shows.
I wouldn't recomend you buy this one at all!! If you like arcade style racing, and want to do it off-road, then get the station version if you want, but there is no way in hell I would even think about this for my PC. Even on the station, I wasn't impressed.
Once again, just in case anybody didn't hear me....THIS GAME SUCKS!!!!
