S.W.A.T. 3 Alright all you Rouge Spear addicts, wanna try it for real this time?!
In S3, you get to take command of a group of five SWAT dudes, and serve high risk warrants, take out terrorists, rescue hostages, etc... As sick as I am of the same old "Rescue the hostages" deal that seems to permeate games these days, it really falls into the world of SWAT, and therefore is semi-realistic goal of an actual SWAT mission.
Good points: Pretty good graphics, shooting through walls and doors to kill baddies, There is a mirror on the end of a stick that is so cool I don't know why there wasn't one in RS, door breeching charges that blow open the door and stun the guy inside, really neat missions, long view distance, (not that you need it alot because all the missions are indoors or psudo-outdoors) the men look fantastic complete with moving eyes and when they reload they drop thier magazine and reach for a new one. Looks cool, hehe.
Now for the bad stuff: One of my biggest complaints about RS was the crappy AI, and SWAT AI is even worse sometimes! You would think that when programming the AI, there would be a few general rules about what SWAT members should just NOT do!! Like walking backwards into an uncleared room, shooting through thier squadmates to kill a baddie on the other side, pushing you out of the way to get into position and in the process pushing you out into the middle of a doorway to get filled with lead. There doesn't seem to be any way to set your mouse sensitivity except but to edit the .ini, so the default setting is a little sensitive. I didn't notice at first because it seems fine for regular play, but I'll be sneaking along, and out of nowhere shots will ring out and they are so loud and realistic that I tend to jump and my mouse skips across the pad, pointing me in god-knows-what direction and I get killed. Not that that is anyones fault but my own, but if you get right into your gaming like I do, and have bad nerves like me, hehehe, then an adjustment in the mouse might be in order.
There are lots of commands to give your men like telling them to "Breach bang and clear", or just "breach and clear", and the AI seems to do this just fine, but sometimes the enemies are on the other side of those doors, and the start to fire as soon as you open it, and the hail of bullets comes crashing through the door to wipe out your squad. I've been up against some guys who seem to be just a little bit too good for me. I would have been glad to have them on MY team, and trade them for some of the guys they take out!! I would think that an average SWAT member could beat just about any terrorist on about any given day, but for one guy to kill all my men inside of 10 seconds?! I chalk some of that up to bad AI, with my men thinking that they can just go around thier buddy who is on his way to death, and go through the door anyways, even while the enemy is laying down the fire.
All in all though, this game is pretty damn sweet. I'm finding it REALLY hard though, so be prepared to replay a mission over and over again. There is no multiplayer support at this time, but they plan to bring that out later. Hopefully with a patch too! But with the state of multiplayer these days, (lag, lag, and more lag) I don't find multiplayer to be a huge selling point right now. Maybe over a LAN if you are lucky enough to have a coupla computers.
My suggestion is that if you really like the Specwar aspects of games like Rouge Spear, then you might want to pick this game up. But without a sniper, I think some people might be dissapointed. BTW, the sounds are some of the best I've ever heard!! When you hit something that is metal, you get a satisfying lead on metal sound, and the guns themselves sound great!
If anyone has any questions about something that maybe I forgot to mention, feel free to ask.
I hope this helps a few of you out.
