In anticipation of the much BIGGER ocean terrain that is being worked on by TG, I started playing around with tiled textures. I cant say I like them but I can see the benefits gained. I tested a 512 ocean tile and I can see a visual improvement with hardly a dip in FPS Now this was with 400 tiles. I was wondering what the improvement would be with just the one tile repeating 400 times. In order to do this I need to know how to have every tile reference that single tile. Do I do this in OPS or by using Hippies tools? If this is something that can only be done in a 3D program could someone do this for me?

I'd post a pic but Webshots wont allow linking images anylonger. I can say the difference is stunning

If you can make me a 512 repeating ocean tile that looks good, then I can REALLY use that!

I have tried to do something along those lines, but mine looked rubbish!

All the testing I have done so far has been with a single rubbish 512 tile, plus a set of midway tiles doubled in size.

I found as you did, that FR's don't seem to be affected at all. I still need to sort out the horizon problem .... I think I need to increase switchins a LOT more! plus play with fog distances

you do this in OPS Diego, what you need to do is open up the terrain in OPS, and open the first Group branch, this will then list all the tiles.

Next, with the Group selected in the directory structure, go into it's Properties, here you will see what texture set is refeenced, eg for Africa you have:

(obProto 'CTerrain) (obTileSuperID "./terrain/africa/textures/africaSuper")

Next, if you click on the first tile (terrain#0) it's properties refere to a texture tile number, this is the texture tile that will be displayed on that tile, eg

(obTileID '0)

So, the terrain tile terrain#0 uses texture africaSuper (from the group) and tile number 0 of that set.

OK, so what you need to do is this:

Save your repeating tile as say OceanTile0
Change the Group Properties to:
(obProto 'CTerrain) (obTileSuperID "./terrain/Ocean/textures/OceanTile")

and change the terrain# tile properties to:
(obTileID '0)

and I think that once you have them all refering to that same tile you will have the repeating texture.
Hope this helps Diego and good luck!

Thanks guys! It will be easier to keep adjusting the texture instead of creating 400 tiles. Time better spent and all that

As soon as I'm satisfied with the outcome I'll send it your way TG.

You, too, Diego: !

You know, I'm laughing because I can remember a time when people were observing how much more was going on in the WWI arena than here. Seems now that the creative juices are really flowing all over the WWII theater!

Good on ya!

That took a while Nat! You gotta love the hand editing that this sim models so well.

The great news is that the terrain loaded in about 5 seconds I think that the 100sq mile terrain would'nt take as long as a regular one.

Another question. Could I take the Malta and Sicily islands from Africa and place them in this terrain by using the info from the OLC tools? That is, copy/paste the actual tile info.

Hey Wing Chaps, who said anything about OP-WWI progress slowing down?!?

Looks good! Will be a pain to upload and download tho... Luckily I now have cable! I hope to see more hi-res terrains released in the future... Our sim life depends on terrains!! They are too few and far between.

Hey Argon, can your modem deal with 1 texture and 1 SM file?

There are huge advantages to this type of terrain creation. Higher FPS, higher res small d/l and if we could get something like Terrascence to work with SDOE files we could have all the variety anyone could want.

Diego, you can copy the islands straight through OPS, you open one terrain, click on the tile you want and copy it, the close it and open the ocean terrain, say you copied tile 200, you would delete that tile from Ocean, and then paste the new tile onto the Group inwhich all the tiles are stored, then your island tile will appear in the right place, all you need to do then is change the texture ref.

btw, yeah, I thought it'd be a quick job lol
