Just installed an All in Wonder Radeon 32MB DDR board.

I noticed there have been questions about ATi and SDOE due to AT's reputation as driver hell. here's what I found>>>>>

Test system: 800Mhz Celeron with 100Mhz FSB and 256 MB ram. DirectX 8.0a

Screen resolution: 1024 X 768, all sliders maxxed

Desired framerates in ini file at default values

D3D under 1.5 and the patch, good frame rates, typically 50-60 fps (the AIW is clocked slower than a regular radeon and lots slower than the Radeon 7500 which uses the same radeon chipset version).
OpenGL, 30-40fps

Problems:
Transparent prop textures and fog have a bluish tint you can't get rid of. prop texture flickers some in OpenGL. These were the ONLY problems and the drivers for this card are MUCH better than the latest detonator drivers which screw up a LOT of thingsin MANY programs. One more note, these framerates are on a AGP 2X motherboard. The card is capable of doing AGP 4X if the MB supports it.

I would easily recommend a Radeon board (as long as the bluish fog/prop tints don't bother you). I have a friend with a Radeon LE on a 1GhZ Athlon 266FSB with 256MB DDR ram. He sees the same prop texture issues, but his framerates never dip below 60fps in any of the std missions.

In addition the hardware T&L makes CFS2 and B17 GORGEOUS.

I plan on upgrading the other computer later this year and I'll put the latest version of the Radeon 8500 in that one. Looks like Nvidia has some competition.

Oh yeah, in case you're wondering, I captured 10 minutes of video to an ATA33 (old & slow drive) at 720X480 with full stereo audio and only dropped several frames. The video quality was EXCELLENT. At 640 X480 NO frames are dropped. If I had a ATA66 or faster drive, I wouldn't have dropped any frames.

Oddly enough, T&L on the GeForce causes problems in B-17.

Thanks a lot, greasemonkey, I am planning to upgrade my system later this month and was not sure whether to choose Radeon or Geforce3. What about FSAA ? does it work in SDOE ? how does the game looks like with it ?
BTW are you using Win 98 or XP ?
Thanks again.

I had a Voodoo 3 2000 for several years and bought a Radeon 7200 64 meg card a week or so ago. With the patched game, the annoying jagged trianglular clipping is gone from the bottom of the dover cliffs which was present in the Voodoo. Overall SDOE is improved (if I'm not mistaken the cockpit bounderies are somewhat smoothed or antialiased). The slight blue tinge to distant fog is something I like and is really only slight ... but distant objects on some days do look bluer than nearer ones.

When it comes to CFS2 ... it is a vast improvement over the Voodoo 3 2000. I can use the highest texture settings on the planes and can see rivets! ... truely looks nice (too bad I couldn't fix the roll-rate wing damage annoyance or turn off the target box around targets ... argh!)

Still SDOE feels better to me than CFS2

Of course Red Baron 3d is no longer nice as it needs a voodoo card's glide to smooth the game. Oh well SDOE open plane ww1 is a pretty good replacement

I would hope ATI improved over their old cards. Mine is an utter piece of shit. I have to say that this has definitely biased my view against buying any thing else of theirs.

On the comment by bullet- don't ever pick up a card based on the rage chipset. If you look at the posts 90% of the people with driver problems are using a variant of the rage chip or earlier
