Just saw Dark Blue World last night.
This film tells the story of a Czech pilot starting with the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia. The story is told from a Communist prison camp in 1950, but most of the story takes place in England, 1940. The movie is in Czech, English and German with English subtitles.

Most of the drama comes from the personal problems of the pilots - learning a new language, working within the larger RAF and it's rules, and (in the case of the younger pilots) growing up and learning about friendship, love and relating to women.

A short description of the plot will share many things in common with Pearl Harbor and Enemy at the Gates, however I thought this movie was much better than either of the other two (I half-liked EATG, and didn't like PH).

The acting in this movie was very good. The characters seemed realistic and developed and sympathetic. The situations felt true to the period. The airplane scenes were very well done, although I'm sure there were technical inaccuracies if you look for them.

The movie was quite sentimental and had some "cuteness" in it, mostly with dogs and young children, although this seemed to fit the setting. The "love story" did seem unnecessarily dramatic, although not totally unbelievable.

Overall, I liked this movie a lot and enjoyed the characters and story.

The film is supposed to get nationwide release in the States soon (I saw 1-11-02 in a comment on www.imdb.com). I believe Landmark is carrying it in the States though it may play in other theaters too.
