I have a voodoo 3 2000 and being 16 bit colour and 16 megs of ram , it's showing a little age ... just wondering what suggestions their are. I really would like to stay around the $150 Canadian range $95 USI was considering this one http://www.ati.com/na/pages/products/pc/radeon32/index.html I guess I'd like to be able to use some larger textures as well IP: Logged |

Well I'd say a general rule should be more ram than features. For instance my GeForce 3 has a whole bunch of things I'll never use on it, but I got a good price so what they hey.My picks would be: GeForce 2 Ti Radeon GeForce 2MX In about that order. The MX is a lot slower than the Ti because it has "two pipelines" instead of four - so roughtly half as fast. I'm not sure if the Radeon has 2 or 4 though. Maury IP: Logged |

The GF2MX is a good budget card, but as Maury says .... if you can afford it, more RAM = better FR's!For SDOE, I find my GF2MX more than good enough. IL2 has pushed it to the limit though, so the choice is yours. ------------------ The Pilot formerly known as W.T.G. IP: Logged |

I upgrade for exactly the same card, so let me tell you needing a cheap card that gives great results, go for a GF2MX-400 64Mb, my FR soared and overal game quality was alot better, make sure you instal the latest Detonator drivers and not the stock drivers, I gained 20fps after installing detonator drivers.IP: Logged |

I upgraded from a Voodoo Banshee to a GeForce2 MX400 64meg card, and I love it! But I also have a question for Nat! Where can I download the Detonator drivers? That sounds like a sweet little boost! Thanks! AF IP: Logged |

Ohhh, that's right. What I said earlier is not exactly correct because there are two MX's. The MX-200 has two pipelines and the MX-400 has all four. IIRC the onl real difference between a MX-400 and a "full" GeForce 2 is that the MX uses slower texture RAM, talks to it slower, and has a slower CPU. So basically it runs some % slower, but not 1/2 like the MX-200. And IIRC, that % isn't a huge number either. Maury

And what about GeForce3 Ti500 or Radeon 8500 ? I'm reading some good things about both, Radeon 8500 being a bit cheaper but last thing I bought was a ATI Rage and have had so many drivers problems that I m not sure I'll buy ATI again. Any suggestions ? Tks SailorIP: Logged |

I have an ATI All-in-Wonder and have had mixed results with the card. It does a stellar job on 2D and TV capture, but gaming is a mixed bag. The ATI Radeon's have a known problems with games like EAW and GPL that still haven't been fixed. EAW intro screens are broken up and you can have problems with fog distancing (worked in DX7, but now it fails in DX8). GPL is a mess. Weird texturing makes the game virtually playless. In SDOE, the Radeon gives me about 70 fps with one aircraft at 1024/32Million colors and I can comfortable play with 20-30 aircraft. When 32 m colors work properly, the are nice, but I do get the blocky clouds, texture tearing, and black textures on the entire ground surface. I have even had pinkish type of clouds too. When I fire up SDOE, I am gambling on what I am gonna see since it is never completely consistant. On other games like NHL2002 (demo), AoE, Empire Earth,CFS2, USAF, Train Sim, and RR Tycoon 2 the AIW works great. Never had a problem and the colors are crisp and clean. I have also noticed that several of my children's CDs fail to work on my system. I chose the ATI AIW based on reviews and for its video capabilities. In retrospect, I think I would still chose the AIW since I use the video alot and my gaming time has plummeted to near zero. I would recommend you check newsgroups such as deja.com to see if people have problems with Radeon's or Geforces on your system's configuration. IP: Logged |
