I would like to know if anyone has made a Texan AT-6 and if there isn't one I would like to start this project. As many of you know the Texan was the most widely used advanced trainer for thousands of fledgling pilots and because of this it does deserve some recognition.

This a/c went by a few different names. Many commonwealth pilots trained on the Harvard in the Empire Air Training Scheme in June 1940 the first of these Harvards was flown to the Canadian border an landed on an adjacent strip and was pushed across the line to waiting RAF pilots. The 1000th Harvard came off the North American line on March 18 1941.
The Royal Australian Air Force had become interested in aquiring a military aircraft that could be made locally. The Wirraway the first of which was delivered to the RAAF in July,1939 powered by a Commonwealth built Pratt & Whitney R-1340-S1H1-G of 600 hp.Subsequently 717 Wirraway trainers were delivered up to August 31 ,1945 many of which were used in combat roles. It looked similar to the harvard but had a rounded bottom to the rudder and swung a three bladed prop. The U.S. Navy also expressed interest in the Texan and ordered 16 1n 1939 as the SNJ-1
It was the most widely used advanced trainer of World War II and post war era a total of 15,649 Texans and Harvards were turned out.

I was lucky enough, as a photojournalist, to fly 'simulated' combat in Harvard vs Harvard against my reporter who wrote the story on the two guys running this business offering the crash course on 'Air Combat'. It was great!! If you made a hit the other plane would start to smoke (using radar type equipment) which set off a small propane tank to leak smoke. Chasing another plane while pulling 5 and a half G's is something else. I'd love to see a Harvard (or Texan) in SDOE.

cheers, Recon3

Thanks RECON 3 and RVW for your support.I have flown in the backseat only. The back stick was in and the pilot asked me if I wanted to fly.Was a bit nervous thinking oh hell this is a Warbird shes gonna be touchy as hell, but to my surprise she was very lite, just the slightest movement gave you a smooth responce. Then the pilot an ex military and ex Ag guy took her over to the low flying training zone and blew me away. I was straining againt the gs as we pulled a few wing overs and steep turns. This is one experience I'll never forget, not quiet as good as your Dogfight Recon 3 ,that would be the ultimate ride .
Would any one be able to help out with this Project? I have WTGs excellent tutorial on modeling and the shareware program AC3D, which I have yet to register, also the pilots handbook. I still need some help though.Any help would be really appreciated.

First off ..
If you want to build that plane...?
Get Ac3d registerd.....It's the best program
to make the Model from my point of View
also Read WTG tut and what you need to
get going..
ol-9 tool's
OPS 1.30 or 1.42 Open Plane editor...
And All the Openplane Tools....

where always here to help you along...
But it takes trial and error and once you get the hang of Building the Model or Models?
We'll to make it fly is the other, But really
there alot of people that can help...They helped me..
Also If it's still around? I hope it is?
is SV's Notes ther really great to learn stuff out of...
Okay from a Start point?? Do the Plane Build from WTG FIRST!!!!!!!!!
The texan Has A shape that's takes a little time to Master if you haven't built a plane
yet? ....Or you can try ...?
I'm not to Discourage you... only Start out on Something Somewhat Simple..The CYlinder type Fuses can WHip you to death!

But WTG's
way to do Some things are really Great and he Explains them very Good...
I hope this Help's on Start But get Ac3d
registered and this is the App we mostly use
some Anim8tor which is free but i haven't learned it yet...and 3DsMax Very exspensive
But Pay the Piper and Your on your way to Building.....btw Does the Share ware Version
Render well with your system...You might want to find out?
Glad to help

Great RVW , thanyou very much for all your helpful tips, this is just the encouragement I needed.Sounds like I've alot to learn, better go register my tools of the trade.
Before I go any further I had better ask WTG
what he has done on the T6
Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
just curious does anyone no how many hours it takes to get a model completed to Betta stage from scratch.

Cheers RVW

G'day Dinga,
Good to hear you want to start on a T-6. After the model is made for that, i't shouldn't be too hard (theoreticaly) to make a tonne of other planes based roughtly on the Harvard, like the BOOMERANG!
I'm pretty much at the same stage of plane making that you are at, I.E. wondering what everything is, and how to work it :)
I'm currently to attempting to build the 3D model for a cirtain well known aircraft, and i understand how overwhelmed you may be feeling ;)

If you need ANY picture of anything on the T-6 or any specific information, give us a yell, and i'll see if i can't help you out

Good luck!

Hi Dinga & Biggles

It'd be great to have a Wirraway. I have a book on the beast - so if ya need info/scans, just drop me a line.

I have a book on the Boomerang too for that matter....

I think Hippie was working on the Boomer a loooong time ago...I don't know how to contact him, but it'd be good to grab what he has of her for someone else to carry on with....

Cheers,

I always try to Help the Guy's From OZ
When i can !!!
To answer your Question....About how long it takes to Build from Scratch....?
WTG can build a plane from Scratch in 2 day's
That's just building....I think?
He may want to Chime in on this? I can't speak for him Because He may Build Faster..
As for me I made A Britsh Ballon In 4 Hours
A german OBS Ballon in 5 hours ( Bigger Ballon)
Rato unit's in 2 hours and Texture.
A pfalzDIIIa.. in What was a Lifetime it seemed!!! It was my first Plane and It wasn't easy but I had help in the end to make it Better...
Just Take your time and Study Other planes That are made from This Forum.. and learn How to Use the Tools to Extract them and To build the.sm file and AC3D to build them
and OPS to edit them and ASK question's..!
So i wonderd OFF ! It takes Really 2 to three months to do a plane.....Ive been on The F6F Hellcat For three Months on and Off
and Just waitng for Razer to DO Some Texture Mapping on Her to Get in SDOE
she is already mind you ....He just wanted to Help out and Do some Magic on her...
Now i have 4 planes in My lap!!!
The Luftwaffe Pack...
Swing over to the Project's and take a look at the Ba-349a Natter which is one of the Four planes Me and Harman_5 are working on Together....
I hope that answered your Question
You have to learn to Crawl before you can Run in Plane building But ! I'm sure you'll get the Hang of it....I did...I think?
