Anyone want to help test the new Updates Program?

It is a program that lets plane makes include a file that will update a users startup.ppf and keyboard.inp file automatically. More detail in the readme.txt

This should reduce confusion for people new to SDOE and makes installing new planes/cars/weapons a snap.

Download Here

It does not include any new lines for the startup.ppf and keyboard.inp, so it will not get a real test until a plane maker decides to try it and includes some new lines for your files.

Now if we only had an installer that could call the Updates.exe itself, we would have one step plane installations

Hi Raider,

I tried the download link below and when I install the program and run it, it still gives me that "MSVBVM60.DLL is missing" error? I'm certain I'm missing this DLL in my system and this is cause...anyway...

One suggestion I wanted to run by you:

Would it be possible to extend the functionality of this program so it adds lines to sounds.ppf also?

I will be releasing a static ground object twin pack very soon and this add-on will require some lines added to the sounds.ppf to enable the sounds for the add-ons. It's just an idea, I know the sounds.ppf is not edited as often as the other two said files and generally not essential for add-on operation but this will make installation, especially of static ground units easier too.

And regarding an installer that calls this program...can be done! The (freeware) installer I used for GP2 and the Fox and the Rats installer allows the add-on maker to add a button at the end of the installation of the add-on, to run a seperate .exe. We could call this updates.exe that way and everything will be done at once.

Cheers,

Harman

Strange, I already had the VB6 runtime in my system folder, so after reading Harms post I move it onto my desktop and rebooted, after the reboot the Updater still works fine for me.

Hopefully others that have never installed this runtime can check to see if the program runs fine for them.

Raider, if there is a problem then I think the simplest thing is to add to the Readme just to say that they must copy the msvbvm60.dll into their windows/system folder, but I was pretty sure it should be OK having it in the programs folder.

Still as I said, worked fine for me, just need to look into more later when I have some time

Ok those having problems loading this update app (like me), visit:
http://www.completelyfreesoftware.com/vb_runtime_files.html

Download VB6 Runtime files and install 'em. I did and the updates.exe works fine now.

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback guys, this is exactly what I needed.

As for the Sound.ppf, that is a good idea. I will see what I can do

Nat, I am sure you are right. After you told me about the driver being in the same directory as the program, I seem to remember hearing that before (in class). I will check it out.

I don't think it should make any difference, but I made the property of "Msvbvm60.dll" Hidden. I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

I will change it back and upload it again. Then see if anyone else that does not have VB on their system can use it.

My goal is to make this as easy as possible especially for new members to SDOE.

Options:

1. Change "Msvbvm60.dll" property back from Hidden / and then test.

2. Try the installer Harman uses. I may just do that anyway.

3. If I have to, I will use the VB deployment/installer. It just uses a little more overhead, but is a one step install.

The thing that prompted this is with most Grand Prix Legands addon's it is just a one click install. I thought that was so cool.

Thanks again guys. On to the next step.

Please, I need someone that does not have Visual Basic installed on their machine to test the new download. (Just use the "Download Here" link at the top) Only change is that "Msvbvm60.dll" is not hidden.

Any takers
