Let us remember why we are here, and continue to honour the memories of those who fought and those who died for our freedom. Lest we forget. WM IP: Logged |

My father was in the pacific fleet assigned to an LSM. He fought in the invasions of Gualdalcanal, Leyte, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa among others. He was 17 when he enlisted and spent his youth fighting for our country and for the freedom and way of life we have today. He passed away this August and we buried him at sea...I shall never forget the sacrifice that my fathers generation, or those that came before him, made so that I may live as I do today. God bless them one and all.Tab Francis H. McHugh NREMT-P in memory of my dad...Francis M. McHugh ------------------ OK...but just ONE more... IP: Logged |

Hi,some words from myside. My Dad fought in russia in an infantry division. He was close to Moskwa (25 km). Shortly before he got wounded he shot down a IL2. After he left hospital he was send to the western front (Rhine). At the end of the war he became PW in an american camp. 2 uncles fought in Africa. They became PW and were sended to a PW Camp in Canada. After war they stood in Canada / Ontario. The eldest brother from my Dad flew a Ju88. He crashed and died while bringing his aircraft back with only one engine. Thx to the community, I got an adress where I will get more information about him. Regards Steffen

Steffen, is today a day of Remembrance in Germany too, or is that observed on a different day? Is it similar to Remembrance Day ceremonies elsewhere? I've never heard a German perspective before, I would be interested to hear what the similarities/differences might be.WM IP: Logged |

My Grandfather also fought on the German side. He drove the Panther tank. However I don't know much more ( he had a stroke and can't speak) I feel I have been cheated somehow from learning from him, hopefully I will be able to talk to him again but the doctors highly doubt it. He is my number one inspiration and I love him very much.Later IP: Logged |

Amazing... I just learned from my mother something I never knew all my life... my grandmother (on my mom's side) had a husband before my grandfather! And he died in a tank in WW2 very early on. My grandfather was involved with training aircraft during the war.So I have a new phantom grandfather... God bless them one and all indeed. IP: Logged |

Rends, thank you very much for describing the German rememberance day.To add my bit here. My Grandfather was in the 101st airborne-511th Sig. company during WWII. His specific unit was involved in the Philipines were they freed tons of american POW's without a sigle casualty. Later they saw heavier fighting against the Japanese, I know he took a whole bunch of shrapnel in the back and still has some nerve damage from that. Now, I also read a fact about his unit, it said the 511th were the first Americans in Japan after the atomic bombs. Sadly my grandfather has severe alzhiemers disease now. No longer can he remember his paratrooper days. But before he got really bad, I was able to learn some information about his service. I also have a few momentos from his days, I have his 101st airborne sleeve patch, his bayonet, a wakisashi and a nambu(a japanese hand gun) that he took off of Japanese soldiers. I also have his brothers purple heart, his brother died on D Day in Normandy I believe and I don't know much else then that. It's almost not fair that my grandfather lived through all of this combat ends up stricken with alzhiemers, but I was able to talk to him and learn enough from him before he was severly stricken. At least now I can read about his company with the information he told me. I'm glad I have had the chance to know him at least. God Bless all of these men who fought to preserve out freedom. ------------------ -Blacksheep http://geocities.com/jays3299/toshindo.html IP: Logged |

Tis a sad thing indeed. It has been 10 years since my one grandfather died of cancer-- when going through his chemo, he told me of some of his actions in the Atlantic. He was on a cruiser that was torpedoed by a U-Boat...he said he didn't remember much, other than how cold that water was My other grandfather died a few tears back-- and it wasn't until I read his obit that I learned he was a Marine at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. These men were heroes to me-- but I didn't realize it til after they had died as they never talked of it. I will never forget.... IP: Logged |
