It's been a while since I just sat down and PLAYED the game. I'm so busy fooling with the new planes and patches that I don't often just fire it up and play a mission.

Too bad, because even though it might be three years old, it really does still totally kick the ass off of every other flight sim out there. The feeling of flight is just SO RIGHT in this game.

I was playing the Typhoon Airfield Attack mission - two of the tiffies tied up on the rnuway so it was our three Fw's against a pair of 38's and the remaining tiff. I pulled down onto the tiff trying to sneak in and he saw me, dumped load, and started the nastiest series of deaks - not big sweeping turns - to throw my aim. I was actually yelling at the screen "shit, this guy is GOOD!". After that I nailed a P-38 that got target stare on one of my wingies and while trying to line up on the last 38 I got a little low and swam home.

I've played them ALL. B-17 is BOR-RING! MiG Alley is OK, but the flight dynamics and combat really just don't cut it. Maybe Il-2 will pull it off, who knows. But in the meantime if someone had some bucks and a few programmers, this could lead the pack once again.

I know what you mean Maury, I have been flying Mace's "Bomber Intercept" with the new SeaMossy and with the new DM for the 88's that Harman (others) did. When I added the new DM the three 88's weave and juke like their trying to avoid fire. I know it's the AI crash avoidance thing but it still looks cool. Most of the time the AI gunners in the 88's knock the crap out of me but sometimes with my cannons I get lucky...

I was just flying the "Bomber Intercept" as a gunner in an 88 and one of the Mossy's let go with a burst, I heard my pilot groan and I looked around to see the control panel spattered with the blood tex I made, we died!
This game rocks!

Hehe we're just lucky that the AI guys don't shoot very well, or this would be one frustrating sim

Even a 1v1 against a poorer turning plane takes some time and skill to win, and the only way to win against a better-turning plane is to learn vertical tactics.

Amazing that the sim is over 3 years old, and still probably the best "dogfighting" sim out there.

If the AI could shoot better and was a little better at avoiding collisions, and we had a bit bigger terrain... ouch.

The AI gunners on the bombers are too good. They open up at 2500 feet and are accurate! I don't know why they are so good and the fighter plane AI not so good.

Jerry.. is that with Jeeves loadouts? alot of people don't realise that the AI will open fire at the range set for the gun in the loadout, I think this is one of the things Jeeves fixed. They are still deadly, but only open up at a much closer (more realistic) range

That's good to know. I haven't really flown much since installing Jeeves loadouts. I look forward to testing them against bombers.

Yup...the bombers with the lower caliber guns (like the 88's and the Lancs)- I changed the range to 1000, and for the B-17's with the heavy .50 calibers....their range is 1500....they were all 3000 before! It remains to be seen if this actually makes a difference! The more testing done, the better

Oh...

all the fighters' gun ranges have been modified as well to those same values depending on the guns...gotta give those bomber crews a fighting chance

Now-- cannon range info I have not found....so they are also at 1500....if anyone has this sort of info, please contact me and I can try to do a versio 2, although I cringe at that idea now LOL

The range issue is a good one. I think that the ranges you note may be too long, I've seen "effective range" on the light MG's at about 750, German 50's at 900 and US and British ones at 1000, and cannons between 1000 and 1200.

BUT, if the AI really is clamping and not firing at all at that range then I think making them a little bit longer is a good idea. Maybe someone can take a peek in the code and see what's happening?

In theory it shouldn't have a huge effect no matter what the range is, getting hit by a 50 at 3000 yards should simply bounce off. Is this actually what happens?

At the moment, bullets don't lose velocity, only height (due to gravity). The code to reduce velocity based on drag is there, but the drag is hard coded at 0.

I am in the process of making the final changes for .10 now, so if someone can give me some info I might be able to do something if its simple.

Much appreciated Maury And when that is finished, I will make any changes and incorporate them (and the writeups you sent me) into Version 2 of the new loadouts (with an appropriate installer to ease installation)!!

even though I haven't played the game in over 2 months it's still on the PC and probably wont ever be removed unless it's to reinstall it. I just wish I had more time to finish off my projects. I'm sure everyone wants the Ki-61, B-26, A-20, and the updated P-39. I just have to much going on.
