All the plane maker know 3DS MAX but it's very expensive.

Now there is a new program called GMAX and it's a 3DS MAX based and it's free!!!!!

you can download it at http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/

I think we will see a lot of beautiful plane soon....

It will not work for SDOE though... only for specific game titles that support it. Wings with Wires would like to support it, but it looks like it is only for big players like Activision kind of guys.

The idea is that anyone can make models with Gmax, but you can not export it in any way. Then a game can license Gmax and create a specific plugin that lets the Gmax user ONLY export to that game directly. The game company then will sell this plugin to the would be modeler to cover their license fee.

So maybe the plugin would cost $40 or something. I think this is meant for games like Quake and stuff that have a large market - because the pricing for a company to license it looks very steep.

I think it is a great idea though... if Gmax was feasible for games with smaller markets like flight-sims, then Wings with Wires would be more apt to adopt 3dsmax as our design platform.

We are still looking at it though... maybe as it catches on it will be more accessible.

All you need is to do is make an exporter for GMAX. Shouldn't be too hard to do...assuming there is an SDK for it.

Dan, I don't think discrete is just going to release the SDK for it. Thats how they make their money.

The game company needs to pay for its use.

Like SV said the company can even pass that fee onto the users, or if its a one time lump sum, maybe just incorperate it into their developer costs.

So how much would it cost SV? Have you checked it out yet?

I checked it out, and SV is right. The thing only has potential if the game developer spends the cash to get a plugin built. It's designed as a front end to game modelling. The developer has to pay for the 'plugin' that interfaces GMax to the game.

No SDK is going to get released, or the concept wouldn't make money.

Like the FAQ says .... you can't render with the free download program, nor can you write plugins for it.

Think I'll stick with AC3D for now ....

came across this ....

GMAX is not free for the developer:

$10,000 for a developer license (good for 2 years, then yearly renewal)

$85,000 per title to release a GMAX GamePack.

So this time its free for the player but very expensive for the developer, so unless some one gives up some of their vital Organs...

And thought it worth sharing!
