Consider the Spitfire "five" model with the production wing, is it:

Mk. Vb
Mk. VB
Mk Vb
Mk VB

I know that might sound like a kinda weenie question, but I want to know FOR SURE. If you know FOR SURE, please write back!

Hmm.... 'b' designates the wing type used with the Spit, let me look at the casing of it...I'll go with my 'spitfire' book and say it is 'B' or #4 in your list.

Since Mk is an abbriviation for Mark, there should be a period after it.

There for, it should look like this: Mk.VB

The k is lowercase as abbriviations are written like that in the English language. Example: Jr.

But also keep in mind that Mk.Ia is correct with the lowercase letter 'a' as 'a' is a subdivision of the Mark I type.

Great question Maury, I've wondered the same myself actually. Also, are there any exceptions to the rule? For instance the SDOE mosquito is predominantly referred to as the FB.VI on other sites I've visited, so I wrote it that way on Rendsburger's list, but I'll make revisions where necessary.

Doesn't "FB" mean "Fighter-Bomber"? Since it's an acronym and not an abbreviation the two uppercase letter might be OK? But then again me stupid froggie.

I'm no English expert , but Pachy ya sort of correct. In the Aussie Army staff duties manual we describe contractions and abbreviations.

An example of a contraction would be Mark = Mk, here only the initial letter is in upper case.

An abbreviation would be Fighter-Bomber = FB, here the first letter of each word is in upper case.

(or was it the other way around....damm where's that manual )

With regard to the original question, I believe none are correct

What's missing is the description of if it was a standard model or specialised, eg:

Standard = F
Low level ops = LF
High altitude ops = HF
Fighter/Recon = FR
Photo/Recon = PR

With this in mind, the correct term would be:

Spitfire F Mk.Vb (if it was standard)

Thanks AGAS. Look close, is there is a space between the Mk. and the letter? Is it...

Mk. V

-or-

Mk.V

No gap (at least in the book I quoted above).
