I was wondering how hard it would be to do special weapon loadouts for the Brit Lancaster. Bombs such as the 12,000 pd. "blast", the streamlined 12,000 pd. "earthquake", and the 22,000 pd. "volcano". The volcano, for those of you that don't know, was first used on March 14, 1945 against the Bielefeld Viaduck which carried a double deck railway. An interesting scenario would be to have one Lancaster equipped with a "volcano" and supported by fighters go against a major target. Question. Has anyone thought of doing sub pens or other major fortified installations?Wulfe190

There is a sub pen by Abbeville Field in the Dover terrain. Although it doesn't appear as a target in the mission editor it is one that you can set as a mission objective manually. Good luck destroying it though. To add the subpen as a mission objective add this to a mission using a text editor. Before you do this you should create the mission with all of your desired components, then add this manually, if you go back to editing it in the mission editor you will likely lose the subpen objective and will need to add it again. Change /add these lines in the msnTargets section of the mission. Change the msnTargets line by adding "SubPen_1" as below (with quotes)): msnTarget("subPen_1" ... ) Then add the following one line below the msnTarget line: msnSubPen_1 ( msnVisible"strVisible" msnAllegiance "Axis" msnDestructionFactor 50 msnName "Sub-pens" ) As far as adding the special lanc loadouts, there are several already available, if you use the special lanc you will find them. This plane's in pp6.0 and pp6.1.

Wulfe190Sorry this is simply not true (missinformation). The name of the bomb was "Grand Slam". Bombs designed by B. Wallis The massive bombs designed by Dr. Barnes Wallis reached the speed of sound during descent being streamlined and equipped with angled fins that produced a rapid spin. Penetrating the ground before exploding they worked by setting off shock waves that would bring down nearby structures. The 5,443 kg (12,000 lb) "Tall Boy" dropped from 6,096m (20,000 feet) made a 24 meter (80 feet) deep crater 30 meter (100 feet) across and could go through 4.88 meter 16 feet of concrete. On 8-9 June, 1944 eight Lancaster bombers of No. 617 Squadron used the deep penetration "Tall Boy" bomb in an attack against the Saumur Rail Tunnel. The new weapon proved its worth but at the cost of losing 5 of the 8 bombers on this mission. Eventually 854 Tallboy bombs were used, the most note-worthy mission resulting in the destruction of the battleship Tirpitz (77 were dropped in three attacks). The "Grand Slam" (Earthquake) bomb was of the same design as the Tallboy but larger and heavier weighing 9,979 kg (22,000 lb). The Grand Slam was first used on 14 March, 1945 when a force of Lancaster bombers led by Royal Air Force Squadron Leader C.C. Calder attacked the Bielefeld railway viaduct destroying two spans. In another attack against submarine pens near Bremen two Grand Slams pentrated over 7 meters (23 feet) of reinforced concrete before exploding causing the collapse of the entire concrete ceiling. 41 Grand Slam Bombs were dropped by the end of the war mainly against bridges and viaducts. You can find all of these bombs (including the 'Dambuster' one) with the 'Special Lancaster' inside PP6.0 (different loadouts)! BTW an excellent work!!!! cheers gt

Speaking of sub pens, this is an interesting reference site with some schematics and photographs. But of course I am partial because I grew up near Lorient. http://www.uboat-bases.com [This message has been edited by Pachy (edited 09-03-2001).] IP: Logged |

GT, thank you for correcting me. I'm very disappointed that a source such as JANE'S Fighting Aircraft of WWII would get the designation of these massive bombs wrong. I will buy the book which you recommend. I like doing research, although most of my efforts have been with ground units of WWII. I am just now getting into WWII flight sims thanks to SDOE, gentlemen such as yourselves, and the support for this game. If I do decide to get back into designing 3D models, for this game, it will probably be ground units. Any requests (be kind please)? Thanks also to spin, Pachy, and Jeeves.BTW....does anyone on this forum play any of the other WWII flight sims? (Probably going to get my wings clipped for asking that question). Well, I'm going to go watch the tube for a bit. Been one of those kind of days. Thanks again gents. Wulfe190 IP: Logged | |
