Just a note to the community about someting I've run into. My old Diamond Monster 3D II board won't handle textures larger than 256x256. That said, if I plunk down the larger schemes (1024s for sure, I forget if this has occured with 512s) into the appropriate directories, they work no problem, especially with the ability to limit the texture size with the latest patch. The problem I've run into is that when reloading a mission later, which is done from the cache, the higher-res skins can then come out looking very low-res and blurry. To rectify the situation, I have to delete the cache file.
Therefore, I suggest the following. If you get this effect, I would recommend:
- Taking the problem scheme and openning it in a paint program.
- Change the color mode to RGB (24-bit color depth) if it's not already (modifying Indexed color, 8-bit color depth, files is not recommended, the results can be very poor).
- Size it down to 72dpi 256x256 pixels.
- Converting it back to Indexed color (if you want to reduce the file size).
- Save it to the appropriate directory.
My guess is that letting the game do the sizing down on the fly is not entirely reliable all the time. Before doing what I suggest above, I would save any high-res schemes to a holding area until such time as you upgrade to a better PC/video card so you don't have to find/download them again. I know I am!
