Hi,

if you look to other german aircrafts, most are feminin.
Die Ju52
Die Messerschmitt
Die Focke Wulf
Die Heinkel He111
etc.
The only maskulin name, as far as i remember is Der Gigant, the huge transporter from Messerschmitt

But it's "das" Flugzeug (airplane), isn't it? So if you give it a name (even just a dumb old number-name) it's a "she" even though the actual thing (airplane) is an "it?"

And what about those Russians? Aren't their ships "he" while everyone else's are "she?" And how come when we name a ship "U.S.S. John F Kennedy, who was a "he," the ship is still a "she?" What's up wit dat?

So if this is true Das Boot would be "him boot" and Die Boot would be some snappy little high heal thing, maybe something with a strap

what we're saying is, Das anything implies an object, whereas if you name it, more often than not it will become Die

Das Fluegzeug because it a plane, and object, but Die Ju52 because your taking one of the maney objects and specifying it with a name.

Not a good example, but it shows a little of the reasoning.

Das Boot because it's a sub, now you wouldn't say Das U52 because you've specified one of maney.. make any sense now? lol

On this side of the Rhine the title had been translated when the movie was in theatres. But somehow "le bateau" does not make a good movie title like "das Boot" does!
