To the community:

The crew is a group of SDOE members that have set out to make on line play easier to tkae part in, and to reduce the current confusion created by competing standards.

It was suggested that someone take control of this issue, and rather than one person being the dictator, we have formed a group to accomplish this.

Our interest is in making SDOE grow as an on-line sim and to bring in new users.

This will encourage the development of future Open Plane sims.

With the current cost of on-line play, we should be able to promote a healthy interest in SDOE in the flight sim community once the problems we've been having are straightened out.

Keep in mid every popular on-line sim has a standard set by the manufacturer's latest release. Because development is not centralized for SDOE, the only alternative we have is to create a group that decides what will be adopted in the standard. We are all avid SDOE fans and only have the best interest of the SDOE community in mind.

Stay tuned . . .

not that I am an online player...yet...

but

Is it feasable to have a 2 tier online standard?

A basic, minimal download beginners level ( so you basically just play a very limited number of new add ons, and an 'advanced' with all the nations stuff, planepacks etc.

This way, someone wanting to try it out, without the experience to handle all the downloads and installs, could play a pretty much 'out of the box' setup.

If the 'advanced' standard doesn't overwrite any of this, then anyone could play missions etc. aimed at 'basic' sdoe, and those wanting to 'upgrade' could download some additional parfiles and have all the extra bits.

If the new patch 'openplane' option allows things to be switched in and out, this might make things easier too.

Just a thought.

One of the main gripes aimed at SDOE is the number of downloads needed to get up to 'standard' and one of the main responses was ' we like all the extras' so this approach should offer something for both points of view.

p.s. For someone like me, with a heavily hacked around setup, I couldn't really use it online. I would need another install. I don't want to eat up vast slices of Hd for this, so a minimal online setup would suit me fine!

Yep, this is one of the big issues The Crew are working on, we want to make Online Standard much simpler for beginners, but easier for everyone over all, allowing more choice, but keeping a simplified Online Standard, and at the same time updates will be alot smaller and easier to implement.

Overall this will be the major project of The Crew to start with.

The Openplane folder seems to work well. Thats how I currently use 6.1. I can go back to 6.0 easily if others don't have it. Seems like 1.5.2.9 would have to be part of the standard though.

Missions are going to cause problems also with all the different terrains. I think we need a common abreviation for each terrain in the mission title. It would be nice if the mission editor could handle this feature. Say if you make a mission for Bavaria Bav.mis is automatically part of the title. Maybe a number would be even better to keep the file name smaller. I remember reading something about trouble with long mission names. It would be nice if the mission editor could recognize a plane thats not part of the next pack also and put that in the mission title also like ____Bav+.mis Mission is in Bavaria and has aircraft not in the current pack. This way you could easily see whats not going to work online and say whoa. I guess WWW is kinda busy right now though, if thats even possible.
