Just a funny question.
If someone textured a terrain in SDOE with 512x512 textures, say, someone retextured the stock Dover terrain in 1024x1024, approximately how large (how huge) would the download be???

Don't know if it could be done....but, if the orig tile was 512 x 512, then times the
size of the texture folder by 4....this should give you an idea

Wait a minute, I'm no expert but all the talk seems to be about how long it would take to download...is that right? Well couldn't certain terrains, (if your machine could handle it), be that big but just PUT IT ON A CD TO MAIL TO PEOPLE. See I'm thinkin of somethin, the people with monster systems do deserve to develop the game so that it competes with how systems are getting bigger. Hi-Tex skins, more detailed terrrains, frame rate eatin planes, ground vehicles, etc. BBBBUUUUUTTTTT the people who can't afford better systems suffer when advances are made,i.e. ONLINE PLAY. What I'm getting at, is there maybe needs to be 2 SDOE's, SDOE("production" does not change from this point just refining stuff, getting rid of bugs etc.) and SDOE GOLD,( where the perspective for development and testing is from the perspective of Super systems, Pentium 4, 32 or 64 graphics card, big time RAM, etc.), would'nt that provide for more exiting development anyways!!!!!!!

That way the online standard would be SDOE, because it accommodates the majority of sytems and is more stable,(free of bugs refined, standardized, etc.), and offline play or elite-online gaming would be better suited to SDOE GOLD. Mainly, because stuff is experimental, harder to fix unless your a pro at programming etc.. The people who are good at the latter, usually have better systems anyway! Lets face it I with the exception of Sturmavich, I don't see any new UBER-WW2-combat flight sims on the horizon. WHy not get organized this way. It ultimately serves both the novice or mediocre system person AND the expert SDOE veterans or people with FANCY_SMANCY sytems.

SDOE

AND

SDOE GOLD

p.s. To solve the downloading problem,i.e. Huge Terrains, all SDOE GOLD stuff would be sent out VIA-MAIL on Cds!!!!!!

THINK ABOUT IT

OR (just to cause a ruckus )
instead of taking the file size x 16 so you could have prettier mountains to plow into What about using that space for enlarging the terrain?. In either case, I would pay for the CD....

Being worked on, I forget who but the CD will have a nice interface so its really easy to use.

Hi-Tex skins,

Can't run em? Don't use 'em. It doesn't get much simpler than that.

more detailed terrrains

Bavaria isn't a FR hog, and there is a lot of wish-listing going on, but nobody has anted up to help the terrain crew out, so I don't expect to see any souped up terrains any time soon.

frame rate eatin planes,

Like? I can't speak about the P51B, but I know that the DIME project is very concious of the "lower end" systems so your core planes aren't going to be eatin' any extra frames.

ground vehicles

Granted, FRs are a little nibbled around the edges, but we've had some great games online anyways.

No more than they ever have. I have a P2 400, 16 Meg Banshee, 192 Megs RAM and a 56k connection. Two years ago, I'd have guaranteed lag with 8 or more people online. Last year, guaranteed lag with 8 or more. This year, guaranteed lag with 8 or more. I'm sure other people in similar circumstances can commiserate. The answer? Fly with an acceptable number of people in a mission, given your hardware. Nobody's flying? Then make a couple missions, post a thread saying when you're going to be online and hopefully a couple people will turn up, but then again its summer and a lot of people are away or busy in the usual flying times.

A noble suggestion, but anyone who could wield the kind of power required to dictate what's SDOE and what's SDOE GOLD, not to mention regulating this online, has missed their calling and ought to be running a country someplace. As wtg stated in your other thread, the online standard hasn't changed, there is just a lot of development coming to a first-public-release stage right now, so people are trying things out. As for a new planepack or similar option, there is a comprehensive plan being worked on, but these things take time.

Enjoy the summer Sturm, I'm sure we'll be blasting each other to bits again come the fall.

Whoa, Sturm, thanks but I think I hardly qualify for that kind of description, I can sling the mud with the best (worst?) of 'em, I just clean up ok.

Interesting idea, two versions of SDOE. Its an elegant solution, but would it in fact create more difficulty?

We already have difficulty in setting an online standard, and what should go in plane packs. We have WWI, WWII, Betas, Ground vehicles, and 1946 aircraft. Some want the sim to be realistic period WWII combat. Others want to experiment and push their skills and machines. If we set out to have two online versions we might further fracture our community.

A fantasy I repeatedly have is of the community buying the rights to the game, or commissioning a re-release by a publisher. If a deadline were set, and a gui created to allows adding options or skins on the fly, we could all have everything we want on a SDOE-II.

What would it take for us to get a company to re-release, or look at selling the rights and source-code? I myself would pay a fairly large sum to contribute to a community owned version of the sim, or to place the sorce code in the public domain.

Some of the older terrain mods had a trick whereby you downloaded jpegs and a script converted them to TIFFs. I seem to recall it working quite well and it made the file much smaller (20 times?).
Was there a problem with this technique that I don't remember?
