If I had to pick one element that makes FS look dated, it would have to be the sky. The monotone color makes the sky look like a giant wall painted blue. This is particularly bad when trying to produce dawn or dusk skies.

A simple gradation in the sky color along the horizon would make a huge difference. To illustrate this, look at these two images. The first one is taken direct from Fighter Squadron...

... notice how the sky looks like a painted wall in the background? This is because the sky is a flat color... something we don't see in real life. Now look at the difference a little bit of gradation can make... the following image is the same image, but altered by me using a paint program...

Amazing how the sky seems to open up... the eye immediately registers the illusion of depth that the gradated horizon creates.

Anyway, that's it... just wanted to share this since it seems like such an easy change that would make a huge difference in the way this game looks.

Given that sims from the early 1990s could do it (I must mention DI's 'Tornado' as usual), I would think that an advanced sim like FS-SDOE could do it without having to resort to a texture, thereby leaving all of us with slower systems behind. The sky in 'Tornado' was graded and at night had stars. I think 'Aces Over Europe' did as well.

well guys, we know that the ppl at Activision went for realism instead of graphic quality ( u can take ww2fighters by Jane's who came out in the same time and graphically there's no match...), I remember I didn't like this too much, but after the first run up and take off run WW2fighters gained a place in my library...
I remember somewhere Bryan talkin even about dynamic lighting (and he even showed us a coupla shots...), so the fading horizon (like the stars) shouldn't be that difficult, just hold on bros!

Right on, JT. This has been my biggest complaint since the FS came out. With all the great looking planes and terrains we have now it's a shame they are framed by such a crappy sky. A graduated sky helps your flying too, making it easier to orient yourself.
