OK, this isn't directly SDOE, but it could be... Once again I'm seriously considering taking to the SDOE skies and why you ask? Simple, I FINALY GOT CABLE!!!!! I'm with NTL Digital in the UK and have taken their cable net connection, it will save me loads on telephone bills, and only costs £26/month (about £60 less than my usual phone bill) No installation costs, I just had to put my ethernet card back in and connect it to the digital reciever. Downloads are STUNNING now, average around 62Kb/s, I've actualy almost got an uptodate version of SDOE now, in just one night LOL before it would have taken at least a week and alot of money for me to do this. As for flying online.. why the hell not when I wont have the massive lag I used to get

Happy days are here again lol

Welcome to the future!

I am on DSL and my brother is on cable and it rocks. Do not forget a firewall, Zonealarm does it for us and it is free.

I also use Download accelerator and it gets me 100-120 KB/sec. We tested cable at more then 300 one time.

Who cares about the size of the plane pack .

don't even get me started on Plane Packs, I'll never forget what it's like having a modem, they are currently far to big and unfreindly..

Still, less of that, I've patched up my Windows system with speed patches for cable, but you're getting realy cool speeds there, I'll look into that

As for firewalls, I have both Conseal PC Firewall (awsome, I can "ghost" the net if I want ) and also Conseal Private Desktop, which is pretty much the same but a little more userfriendly, it will show you exactly whats going on in laymans terms, but PC Firewall is stunning

Now what I realy need to do is find out how to set myself up to run FTP

There are many good free FTP servers out there with different level of complexity.
I have tested WARFtp and it worked great. I tend to like a temporary HTTP server (from Analogx) it is more accesible, but I have to remenmber that I can only serve at 512kbps, check your service for upstream limitations.

All you have to do is setup the server and allow server traffic over the appropriate port (80 or 21 usualy). Most firewall will permit you to open and close the door on demand and select who can come in.

You seem to know your way arround. I have no merit for my fast downloads I use to work for the phone company that supplies my DSL and my line has been fine tuned

I like Zonealarm because it's free and easy enough for everybody to set it up. You can test your firewall at www.grc.com.

Thanks for the link, I used to have that one but lost it ages ago, anyway, here's my results:

Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.

Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.

Stealth! Explained

If all of the tested ports were shown to have stealth status, then for all intents and purposes your computer doesn't exist to scanners on the Internet!

It means that either your computer is turned off or disconnected from the Net (which seems unlikely since you must be using it right now!) or an effective stealth firewall is blocking all unauthorized external contact with your computer. This means that it is completely opaque to random scans and direct assault. Even if this machine had previously been scanned and logged by a would-be intruder, a methodical return to this IP address will lead any attacker to believe that your machine is turned off, disconnected, or no longer exists. You couldn't ask for anything better.

There's one additional benefit: scanners are actually hurt by probing this machine! You may have noticed how slowly the probing proceeded. This was caused by your firewall! It was required, since your firewall is discarding the connection-attempt messages sent to your ports. A non-firewalled PC responds immediately that a connection is either refused or accepted, telling a scanner that it's found a live one ... and allowing it to get on with its scanning. But your firewall is acting like a black hole for TCP/IP packets! This means that it's necessary for a scanner to sit around and wait for the maximum round-trip time possible — across the entire Net, into your machine, and back again — before it can safely conclude that there's no computer at the other end. That's very cool.

hhhhmmmmm have we diversed from the topic of the thread? LOL

Let's move it back

I never flew online, probably not good enough , but at 100KB/sec it is very tempting.

Are the game servers fast enough to support this kind of stress? ..maybe lag would come from the server's respomse time...

That's what the newbie nights are for! You don't have to be "good enough", you just need to have a desire for a fun time!

the cost was the big thing.. having cable at £26/month will save me around £70 or so, plus all the hassle of not being able to do more than 1 thing at once because of bandwidth... this is bettere than when I got my Duron 900!
